Who make the best engines ?

Which road-car makers produce the best engines ? Not the most powerful, not the highest revving, but just the most capable ?

And let's disqualify V10 and V12 engines from consideration, OK ?

I'm expecting most nominations to be latest-generation, but you never know ....

On balance of things, I'd say BMW. Engine is their middle name!

Indeed, you need to quantify capable. Most torque, most power per litre, lightest weight, most efficient, etc, etc. Then there's the unquantifiable stuff like most charismatic. Far to many variables to consider.

Would have to go with Honda. The performance enghines are very capable, maybe not the most powerful engines low down but offer great power in the top end coupled with bulletproof Honda reliability.

Tuning wise they are not the greatest, it seems you spend a lot of money to get little gains compared to other motors but on the whole they tend to be excellent engines.

Im not the biggest fan, but to be fair BMW do win an awful lot of awards for their Engines. I just wish they'd make some more interesting cars to put them in.

And Honda too, of course - I'm wondering what their engineers are working on these days...

Honda. IIRC they also make more internal combustion engines than anybody else in the world, and have for a long time.

BMW, Honda or GM for me. Probably leaning towards BMW for a quite a range of extremely impressive engines from their 4 cylinder diesels right up to the V12 in the McLaren F1.

Charisma aside, the most impressed I've been recently with an engine was in a Mondeo 2.0 Diesel. Considering it's size (both the engine being small and the car being large) it still had plenty of poke, didn't sound like a tractor and pulled 50+ MPG without even trying. An impressive feat! If a somewhat unorthadox choice for this sort of thread.

EDIT: I can't believe I just voted for a diesel *hangs head in shame*

Indeed our sixties 500 has started seven times out of the last ten without AA assistance, my Fiat Coupe Turbo spat its dummy out, both fantastic example !

I am kidding, they are doing some serious innovation with things like Multi-air.

Honda for reliability, certainly.

Don't know if the old chestnut about the 2.0 VTEC having a 100% head reliability rate is true, but even if it's only almost true it's good for such a high revving unit.
