I do not want to muck up my pride and joy, so does anyone have any ideas as to what might be suitable given the following criteria?;

Positive steering feedback
Good balance
Reasonable performance
Good economy, ie 35-40mpg on a run
Quiet and comfortable enough for 2 hr journey`s
Not silly money
Carrying space not an issue, ie 2/4 doors/seats..mostly will be me on my tod
A bit of individuality or character would be nice

Trouble is my missus`s Focus 1.6 Zetec comes worryingly close to achieve nearly all the above....sluggish yes and little character, but otherwise?

I'm running around in an ideal winter car atm as i look for another car.Cheap and cheerful diesel Xsara 2.0 HDi (2003) getting around 50mpg and has lots of toys, AC, CD multi-player, remote locking, e/windows, new tyres.Not that 'quick' but eats miles on the motorway with ease. When i find a car soon it'll be back up for what it owes me, a modest £750.

I almost got a contract that would have meant a 100 mile/day commute, so I looked for similar as the Mondeo is far too thirsty for that. My list was similar to yours, and I settle on a Punto diesel. 70mpg swung it for me, and they are cheap as chips. Didn't get the contract though, so I didn't get the Punto either.
