It seems that the heating in the Merc is playing up and is far from hot.

I'm no mechanic but:

Engine temp is OK- stays level
Some heat comes out but the level remains the same regardless of dial position
Water level is fine

Any ideas? Potentially expensive?

Get new car... and yes, very for you!

HTH biggrin

Seriously... heater matrix, or maybe thermostat, or possibly lots of issues really?

Does sound like an airlock in the matrix to me, but I'm not a Merc man. There's probably an air-bleed under the bonnet near the bulkhead.

Just had the same problem with my Alfa, low engine temp & no heat from the heater. Changed the thermostat, all tickety boo & now have lovely heat on tap!

Easy to bleed the coolant, to clear any airlock ... just found this on some Merc forum.

To bleed the cooling system ..

You Need Unscrew The Hose Clip at
The TOP hose
or
The themostat hose to the Expension tank ...
Start the Engine ...
Let the water pump ... to circulate the system
at the same time to release the AIR from the system

Once The System Is fully circulating w/out any air (bubbles)
meant The system is Full With WATER ..
simple was That .. right ... DIY
hope this helps..........

ETA: If not that, next check stat opens & closes in a pan of water brought to the boil.

If the coolant hasn't been changed in 2 years you may as well get a new stat anyway and have the cooland changed and bled. Won't cost much to have a garage do that.
