Hi all,

I have always worked in the retail environment after leaving home and stopping education after completing AS levels, but have decided that is really not for me.

I have wanted to get into plumbing for several years and have some experience with helping my Dad plumb in his extension (2 bathrooms, central heating etc) and have recently installed a new kitchen for my Gran, although there was only a little plumbing to do.

My question is how would you recommend I get into plumbing best? I don't have any large some of money to go on one of the £6k courses that some companies are offering, I was looking at 'access2trade' a few months ago before they went bust. And will need to fit in training around working as I have bills to pay!
What sort of qualification should I be looking at getting? NVQ? Apprenticeship? any others I should be looking at? I have just turned 22, I don't know if that makes it any easier of harder to get any particular qualifications.

Since I started working I have had a few different jobs and have gained quite a lot of experience.
When I was 16 I started up and ran my own retail shop - this taught me so much about everything as I ran the business by myself.
Then after a couple of years I sold the business and started working at a DIY store as a sales colleague, I progressed into a supervisor position.
Then I got a job running a small company selling products through ebay - this refreshed a lot of my knowledge about running a company/business and I really enjoyed it.
I then had a temporary, managerial, position in the same DIY store as above.
I currently work in an electrical shop as a sales colleague - I am not enjoying this very much to be honest, there seems to be a lot of snobbery in the branch I work in.

In 5 years time I see myself running my own plumbing and electricians business, mainly doing installs on new build houses.

I would really appreciate some advice as I really want to progress in life and get on with some of my dreams! I have one dream ticked off the list as I got engaged the other day smile So it would be really great to make my future a bit more secure by progressing in my employment prospects.

First stop get an apprenticeship if you can, could take up to four years to complete. If not many colleges offer courses, I think there for 2 years, but even after this you will still be lacking in real world experiance.

Just remember if it was easy everyone would do it. And any fool can solder a pipe, being a real plumber is a lot more work, especially if you have your own business. This applies for just about any trade. Good luck.
