Go through the usual questions ("is there any rust on the car?", "does it blow blue smoke from the exhaust on idle" and so on) then ask "will I be disappointed when I see the car?". Any hesitation and you need to get the Pedigree Chum in wink .

Also, when viewing the car make sure you get to start the car from stone cold - if it's already warmed up, ask to try it from cold the next day. And let your own personal issues about buying a car from someone with their little piggy eyes too close together/someone who tries too hard to sell the car/whatever... run riot. It's your hard-earned, why let some joker walk away with it having sold you a pup??? smile

Any doubts - hang any potential discount... walk.

Only if happy with the bloke and car, haggle. Make a comedy offer and work back up - worst that can happen is he is uncomplimentary... bob back up and meet him half way (roughly).

see lots of the same model so you know what you are talking about.

if you can't even find the bonnet release he will know you know nothing about them, and wont drop a penny

A £2K dealer car is only worth about £1,200 privately. I would personally not buy a car that cheap from a dealer, instead simply buy privately and get more for your money

Disagree. This car would be worth £3k as a private sale. £2600 min. There will be a good reason why it is so cheap.

However agree that buying from a dealer is not a good thing at this price range. They know how to cover problems better as well

Can't really find what I'm looking for but if you take the time there are loads of posts on Dealer bashing.

But i would agree with the post above. In fact I wouldn't even give the dealer the business, whats he going to give you a grerat deal? Its a business. Remember that they have to pay the salesman, the rent for the premises, the upkeep of the showroom, the bills etc, etc. You have to pay some of this cost.

The difference between dealers and private is usually thousands more and sale of goods act, good luck with that one if it goes wrong after 3 months.

The internet is slowly wiping these people out of business in the 2nd hand market so go private, get more for your money and get it inspected by the AA. Laughing all the way to the bank.

but if you still want to buy from said dealer do as above, produce the £1700 slap it on the bonnet, tell him its all i've got, take it or leave it.

^^^ good advice there.

For me the best way of haggling is to only have what you are willing to pay in your pocket. But most importantly to not care that much if you end up with the car or not. This is actually a really hard thing to do, as simple as it may sound

Given the cars you are looking at in the other thread - at that price the warranty is worth nothing (check countless previous SP&L / GG posts for experiences)

At that price, 2k buys you a 2k car with minimal protection and you should approach it that way - same as a private sale. Don't value anything the dealer says about back up services, warranty, etc.

Start low enough to get to a compromise, high enough that he won't be insulted but on the condition of the car. On 2k, £1700 would be my starting price and if the car is right, move up in £25/30 units to what you are willing to pay.

Immediately after making an offer, hold out your hand. It is an automatic reaction to want to shake it. Its a trick they use...

I got 20% off a dealer by phoning up and saying "If you want a very quick no hassle cash sale I will pop over and pay £x in cash right now."

Dealer said no right away. But I left my phone number if he changed his mind. He called me back three days later and said ok.

No point trying that if you going to turn up, maybe buy it, then see if you can afford the finance. You just potentially wasting their time. They will tell you to jog on.

This is what I would say, but when trying to buy a car in September I offered on three (less than 10% below the asking price), walked away when they didn't jump at the offer, and didn't even get a call back.

Funnily enough, they're still for sale.

yeh I've always been surprised by the stupid arrogance of dealers I made an offer on a car back in March, its only just sold, thats 7 months on the forecourt. Worse than bankers.

Anyway, with regards to finance just say no. Not that anyone is getting finance anyway, with current conditions. If the dealer thinks you're good for finance you can get forget driving a hard bargain, you'll be defending yourself from signing up for 30%APR or whatever it is at the moment.

Best advice is simple say thats all I have I don't have anything else and I will get turned down for finance, make something up, slap the money into his hand extend as to shake his, then ask if we have a deal. He will scuttle off to check his commission on a calculator and if he can still make money on it you'll be in luck, because he'll make his money back on the next moron who walks in and pays the sticker price.

An AA inspection on a 2 grand car?
At that price level I doubt many cars would be in showroom brand spanking condition wink
