Hi folks,

I am thinking about building another canam, and am very much tempted to create a much lighter version of it. Is there anybody that tried to strip off as much as possible ? I am thinking about the low wind screen and putting one tank only, slightly larger than the factory one with a built in pump which will save me a lot of lines and components in the fuel system. Another heavy part of the car are the discs, I think you can save a lot there with ceramic or carbon ?
So who can offer the car with lowest weight and how did you do it ?

ive heard all kinds of figures mentioned but i would guess at 980kg for a GTR would be about the lowest you could go?

I had a closer look at the SL-C nice car, too, maybe an alternative for an ultima. More space inside from what I see in the pics.

I was under the impression the factory state a sbc engined Gtr is 990 kg, so how much does an LS version weigh as surely a alloy blocked engine will save some weight?

And again the Audi engines what do they weigh?

Like kyles mine will be as light as his soon as the engine and box will be out.

I need to get my Canam on the scales, but I would expect it to come in on the light side. It's a bare bones no frills build using a Dart aluminum block SBC.

Didn't Stuart mention his GTR weighed 920kg? Must be one of the lightest road legal ones.

This is what Stuart posted:

"Active rear aero, 700hp, 920kg and wind tunnel proven diffuser/flat floor/dive planes."

Perhaps it was 970kg with Steves biscuits in it?

My old GTR (storer's) was 948kg on the scales at Mallory Park, Stewards did tell me the scales weren't checked reguarly though so probably wrong.

However mine didn't have a full roll cage, had an alloy LT5 motor, lighter wheels and minimal bits n bobs... probably had no water or oil in either smile

980kg with some fuel. Without going to lightweight carbon body panels its really difficult to see anywhere that worthwhile savings can be made; even the standard wheels are quite reasonable.

We reckon 920kg for best track use by removing aircon, handbrake mech, hydraulic rise kit and passenger seat. I'm happy to leave it as a civilised road car at present.

The necessity for coffee and choc digestives when working on cars extends down into West Sussex as well..biggrin

the factory specs say the spyder is 850kg, 1870lbs but never actually weighed it. I can only get one wheel on my bathroom scales!

I didn't think those scales used for SVA were very accurate though, just a thought. Still with you in Simon, all up that makes it over a tonne wink

that makes your car 180 kgs lighter than my one (i corner weighed mine) with a similar spec??? I know the SVA scales weigh a little light but surelly they cant be that different?
