Hi all,

I've long been worried about the amount of time that drivers are now spending checking their speedos.

But looking at an example of an apparently "sensible" camera installation in the run up to a "dangerous" crossroads on a 50mph single carriageway, over 50% (so
far) of drivers are reporting checking their speedos three or more times in an 8 second period. We think speedo checks take about a second. This is a MASSIVE
amount of attention diverted from the road.

Please cast your vote in this Safe Speed forum poll:
www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=247
(simple registration required to vote.)

Results will be published and analysed to Safe Speed page:
www.safespeed.org.uk/speedo.html

This page also includes an experimental method for determining the approximate duration of a speedometer check. Try to do the experiment and report your results.

Best Regards
Paul Smith

I've written to Avon Scamership about the camera at the junction on A303 at Yeovilton 50mph zone.

If you sit and wait at the junction & watch what oncoming are drivers are doing.......

They are not looking at the approaching hazard (the crossroads), they are checking their mirrors at the camera they have just passed or their speedo's. It's so bloody damn obvious it's ridiculous.

I was even going to set up a camera at the junction & take some pictures of peoples faces, just to see what the results were & send them into the papers. Only I don't have a camera or lens suitable. I'll still be up for it if anyone is keen & suitably equipped.
