Its nothing more than a military base on Gibralter but if you live off the rock and commute, then its worth doing but, I would strongly recommend a long weekend on Gib, to get a feel of the area, I felt cramped and as though I was on a ROUGH council estate when I stayed for a weekend, hence my comment about trial weekend.

I assume you mean gibralter, I would def. agree with the council estate comments, (no offence intended to people who live on council estates), I spent two weeks there, I was shooting mostly topless stuff so it made it more bearable.

Lets see, english pubs, imagine the cantina in star wars, a very claustrophobic feel to it, the streets are full of hustlers and tourists. Its expensive to live in gib, I was on expenses, but flats are London prices most people live in la linea de la concepcion, just over the border, which I have to say is also a hole.

I'm not sure visiting is going to help you, I went as tourist for a weekend and loved it.

I'm assuming you are going to work at one of the various bookmakers that moved in to avoid VAT, they are about the only major employment opportunity.

The good points, you have the whole of southern spain at your finger tips, Morocco is an hour away, the weather is great.

In short I'd do it, its January you got a callcentre in Salford, freezing weather, after work head into some ste pub or callcentre on the med, leave work with t-shirt on, head down to the beach with some beers.

Gibraltar! is as already been said, expensive for accomodation, so again, as has been said, people live over the border in Spain. Forget La Linea, the council is virtually bust, with the local police having to get the bus to get around as they can't afford to run the cars, I kid you not! added to which the who area of la Linea is a dump. Only problem with crossing the border every day, is the lottery for how long it will take you to actually cross, sometimes straight through, but if there are political issues between UK and Spain etc, then 2-3 hours can be the norm!

Gibraltar itself can be a shock when you first arrive, it has changed its appearance over the years, but it is still rather grotty in places.

If you however want a change, with some decent weather (Gibraltar however can be covered in cloud, (Levante) some days, where a few Miles across to Spain its sunshine), the fact you can speak English, use known banks and shops/supermarkets helps a little for home comforts, not to mention the way of life in Spain.........on your doorstep.
Have a weekend over there if you have not already and take a look.

i worked for a week there and loved it, but i can see that it would start to feel like a bit of a prison if you stayed too long

cheers for the replies. Yes sorry Gibraltar. Its actually a construction job not bookies. I wouldnt necessarily have to stay on Gib, anywhere withing 30 -45 mins would be fine. I went on holiday a few years back traveling around Andalucia and absolutely loved it, i love the chilled out spanish way of life and the culture - i like being in cities surrounded by the locals rather than tourists so i think i'd like it.

providing you can cross the border quckly, 30 - 40 mins travel by car opens up much better places to base yourself, rather gib

Providing Caterham owners don't behave like TVR owners i.e. total cocks, then we'll let this one go.biggrin

The OP would probabably like to hear more thoughts on gib as well

I like Andalucia a lot too, but Gib isn't the same,
it's more like a Southern version of Aldershot
with more heat.

A long way to go just to meet a lot of Brits and
visit a branch of BHS, in my view.
