I've noticed a fairly quiet ticking noise coming from somewhere in my '5.

It seems to happen when cruising along at about 2k rpm in 3rd, but only if I've got the acclerator depressed. If I take my foot off it stops, or even if I depress the clutch slightly (even if I don't let off the throttle at all).

It happens when it's cold or warm, but I guess it could be the tappets? It doesn't seem to happen when accelerating or when higher up the rev range, but it might be, but I just can't hear it over my blowing exhaust hehe

Any ideas?

Mine does exactly the same thing. I find it's most irritating in very slow-moving traffic - because you're on the throttle, but there's no road noise to cover it up.

It's been doing it for 15,000 miles so far so even if it turns out to be something that's fixable, it's probably not serious smile

Hahah that's reassuring then! I'd still like to know what it is though, otherwise it will just annoy me!

I've discovered it happens in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears, so I guess it probably happens in all gears. I think it also does it up to 3k RPM, but the ticking noise doesn't seem to increase in frequency with higher RPMs, so I don't think it's be tappets?

My Mk1 used to do this. I could only hear it in multi-story car parks with the throttle only slightly depressed.

I think it is the tappets, but it's not serious. I believe the cure is to change the oil like 3 times in quick succession or something... I never tried fixing it.

Would the tappets, uh, tap if the clutch is in though? Why does the noise stop if the clutch is in?

Apparently it's likely to be the purge valve for the carbon canister, and not something to worry about too much.

Anyone have any idea about this?! I've never heard of it before (but that's not saying much hehe).

I uhm, removed mine completely a few months ago, bet that'll stop the problem smile (If it is the carbon canister)
