Ok, I don't know a great deal about watches and wandering into this forum is a step into the unknown but here goes. I currently own one of these http://maryws.ceasuridemana.ro/pictures/2010/02/05... but it's now looking a bit tatty and worn out so I'm after a replacement.

My budget is £100 which I know is very little in the world of watches but I'm just looking for something smart, simple and stainless steel. Any ideas folks?

(Any left field choices may also get considered so feel free to share them too!)

With respect Fossil & Seiko are not on the same planet in terms of quality.

I have a Sekonda chrono on a rubber strap that looks cool. They do chronos on steel bands too at places like watch hut. Since the strap on mine broke, I'm going for a stainless steel jobbie next time.

OK who out of the budget brands is actually quite good quality for the price? Serious question? My thoughts are that the manufacturers who have been doing it years (e.g. seiko, sekonda, casio, lorus, pulsar) probably produce better products than the fashion brands like guess, fossil, ck, etc. Would I be right?

Thanks for the input chaps, got me looking at all sorts now. Taken a liking to the black anodized look of: http://www.watch33.com/acatalog/T2410141a.jpg along with the very clean face but sadly that's a bit out of budget and the ones more in my price range seem to be more diving watches with huge bezels which I don't really like the look of.

Out of all of those, Seiko for me. The fact they actually make all of what goes into their watches. smile
The fashion brands will in all likelihood be using the same movements as the Sekonda and the other 'badge-engineering' exercises as well.

OP, go Seiko! smile

+1 for Seiko. After having owned Omegas, Brietlings and a JLC (all of which were lovely, but cost a fortune to fix and service) + (every **** around me seems to own them), I now have a collection of Seikos (Vintage, Japan only models and budget). Lovely, simple, classic and they do the job.

After my Fossil fell to pieces during a night of bouncing around listening to Beardyman, I'd be inclined to agree with that statement... Hour markers fell out of place, the second hand now has a mind of it's own and I can't even be bothered to work out what the minute and hour hands are doing..

It's a shame really as I quite liked it..

Interesting, this might explain why my sekonda strap fell apart after 5 months and barely any wear. Will go Seiko, Citizen, Casio (been meaning to get a g-shock for ages) next time.

I also like some of the current timex designs and am tempted just to replace my existing er.. "beater" watch. Should I ignore them or are these ok?

There's a lot to be said for G-Shocks. I've got a gulfman and really rather like the inverted snobbery that goes with it wink

It shares wrist time with my sinn about 40%/40% and a TW Steel which gets maybe 20%.
