Reverse Lights, mind of their own !!

Got a small problem with my reverse lights. Since my engine rebuild they've decided to stop working, nothing else stopped working but I checked fuse anyway and it was OK. Checked bulbs and they're OK also. Today, the offside reverse light has decided to come on permanently, while the ignition is on. All other lights function correctly. The car has just had the engine out but I can't see how any engine/bay work would effect this, as gearbox wasn't removed. It seems like an earth problem but I can't understand why nothing else is playing up. Any ideas anyone ??
Car's a 1993 Griff 500.

Could be the diaphram inside the switch is split allowing gearbox fluid to leak in completing the circuit. Answer, a new switch.

Yes it is illegal and yes I've taken the bulbs out. Thanks.
Does anyone know if the wiring from the gearbox switch is a spur off the engine bay harness, or is it seperate ?

Switch sounds favourite. It'll be fairly common as you have the Rover box (?).

5 minute fix, provided you can get underneath. Switch is screwed into the box casing opposite the reverse gate (i.e. on the driver's side).
