Hi all

I'm sure this q has been posted b4, but I'm looking for a practical small 4-door second hand car to run for upto £2500 (the cheaper the better!!), also cheap to insure & tax. I'll need it to do 100mile daily round work trips & my medium family car is absolutely killing me for fuel at the mo!!

I've been researching & the usual suspects of citroen c1, fiats & fords have cropped up, but would like advice from fellow posters with real practical experience of running such cars

Any responses much appreciated

You could pick up a Yaris 1.4 diesel for that sort of money. I currently have a 3 door version for my 100 mile daily commute (20 miles on A5 and 30 miles of M1). Have done just under 40k (car has just done 100k total) in it so far with no issues.
MPG wise I am a geek and can say the following.

Filled up 58 times.
Over 70 mpg = 2 times.
65 - 70 mpg = 10 times.
60 - 65 mpg = 33 times.
55 - 60 mpg = 10 times.
50 - 55 mpg = 3 times.

This was based on fillups and mileage, not trip computer.

Costs £30 a year to tax and is the main reason I can afford to run an FC RX7 as my weekend / track car.

Only thing I have had to fix was a wheel bearing, otherwise it has just had services and a couple of tyres.

Car had a remap when I first bought it as it just needed a bit more power for motorway journeys. Cost £200 and did make the car noticeably better on motorway and also increased economy by about 2-3 mpg.

Hope this helps.

What is your "medium family car" and what MPG are you getting at the moment?
