Evening All - Apologies if this is a recurring question but I did a search and looked through the first few pages and couldn't see anything...

Basically I'm thinking of taking on some part time work - but the usual bar/shop/paper-round options really don't appeal, then the idea of the T/A popped in to my head. Now this definitely appeals, as it's doing something worthwhile and you get to actually learn something useful and contrasts nicely with sitting in an office all day!

My question, as shallow as it sound relates to the pay. From what I can find on the army website it would suggest the new starters is around £34 per day. This seems bar work/trolley wally levels....I was just wondering if anyone in the know could clear this up, and whether it's worth getting in to?

I don't know if it's relevant, but I'm 29 and have a reasonable level of fitness that I'd be willing to work on should I need to!

TA pay is equivalent to the daily rates for regular soldiers of the same rank so yes, mid £30s/day sounds right for a new trainee (remember, most regular new recruits are 16 and fresh from school). Once you have reached a certain level of training, then you will become a Private soldier and your pay will increase. The 18 year olds out in Afghanistan are not on footballers wages - they're not even on firefighters wages.

I wouldn't look on it as a part-time job though - there is a good chance that if you stay in for at least a couple of years you will be deploying to hot and sandy places. Do it for the training opportunities, the skills that you can take back to the workplace, the people you'll meet, the experiences you'll have, and the fact you want to do it.

The fitness test requirements are posted on the Army website somewhere, but they're not taxing if you keep yourself in reasonable shape. Have a look at what different areas of the Army do (Infantry, Logistics, RE, REME, Intel, etc.), see what units are in your local area, give them a call and see what floats your boat (you could also try RNR - see what I did there? tongue out ). There's also plenty of current TA and Regulars on here with more knowledge who'll hopefully chip in (ex-OTC and RN for a bit here).

im in an OTC at the moment and technically we're TA. my days pay is £39.27.

however as you would be a new entrant you would get paid £34.41 till you have the rank of private when you would get paid £42.91.

i wouldnt think of it as a part time job really, it is actually quite time consuming, 3ish hours on a weekday night for which you get paid either a quarter days pay or half days pay depending on how generous your units adjuntant is. you also have to attend weekends, im not sure how many you would have but i tend to have a training weekend every other weekend and they are quite intensive. expect to leave your centre at 8pm on a friday and not to return till 5pm on a sunday night, and they are long days. we tend to work 5am till 10pm when based in barracks and working all day when on field exercises.
