Hi
Can anyone help, I have a e46 m3 smg, the gears have started playing up. After about 30-40miles the gear light comes on and a little longer and then it just takes itself out of gear and will not go back in for about 24 hours. When the car is opened you can hear the pump engaging and it does change for a while.

Has the pump gone or should I look at other things, I had the relay changed and software upgraded but it still does it. It only done 40k. No one wants to really look at it and the garages just say its the pump. £1800.

Can anyone help?

Hi mate, Sounds very much like the pump is dying. The same thing just happened to mine and had to fork out over £2000 inc labour.

The issue could also be linked to gear position sensor, gearbox spring or gear id switch. These are cheaper fixes however they are mainly linked with a sluggish gearchange.

My clutch is due for a change shortly so will be changing all of these items as a safety precaution. The SMG2 is a great unit but is an absolute pain in the arse when it starts to go wrong!!!!

Good luck!

Hi mate
Thanks for the reply, yes I'm starting to think the pump, however like today it's going like a dream no probs. How many miles had yours done when it went? Just @ only 40,000 miles seem to be very early for a car like this.

have you had the fault codes read?

it may just be the bonnet switch which if faulty will not allow the gear change to work and the light comes on, but can then work fine for a while

Try opening an closing the bonnet a few times and then put in gear and se if it makes a difference to the gearbox light

Mine had just gone 100k when it went. Your best bet will be to follow the advice and get the fault codes read by a specialist.

I have read about pumps that have gone on cars with low miles but have usually been covered by warranty. If your still on warranty then bmw should cover the whole system. If not then you may be able to purchase a recon unit for around a £1000. I decided to go with the BMW route as they offer a 2 year warranty on the part.

Good luck mate!
