Just to make it totally clear from the start, we will not be doing this ourselves as we do not have the relevant qualifications! I am mearly after advise so we don't get done by the properly trained person who will do it!

Right, our current Alpha CB24 boiler has done us proud but now needs more work than is viable. We have in our possession a new shiney Alpha CB25X. From what I understand, the manufacturer requires that it must be connected to one of their own flues ie not a baxi one but if it fits, can our existing flue be used as it is the same manufacturer? Or do we need to take our kitchen out to have it replaced with a new flue?

Thanks

Hannah

I doubt your old boiler was a condensing model? The new one will be and I'd imagine the flue would be a completely different material. I seriously doubt you would be able to use the exisitng flue.

Correct, old one wasn't condensing, new one is. But from what I understand that means that the temp of the exhast gases will be a lower so does it make a difference?

The condensation produced by boilers is mildly acidic.

I'm assuming the reason manufacturers are using plastic is for resistance to corrosion, which your old metal flue may not stand up to.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong!

Our current flue is a plastic one, its about 8 years old, but not sure if it will take the 'vinegar-like' solution that it mentions.

Best bet is to phone Alpha's technical department, although they may not speak to you if you are not Gas Safe registered.

To change the flue, requires most of our kitchen to be removed thanks to the great planning of the builders, so if we can avoid it, it is preferable but if it is nessecary then it will do but it adds to the expense of the job which is on a budget already.

Tried Alpha this morning, as expected they won't help me as I'm not qualified Gas Safe even though I explained I'm not doing it myself, I just don't want to be done by the person who does. But never mind, it made me laugh as he spoke slowly and in chav terms as obviously, as a woman, I know nothing about these teck-no-ma-logikal things down there being lots of 'shiney things' and 'things that need tools' inside my boiler! Well, that's my item for today learnt!
