Hi guys,

Trading my car in tomorrow, however I want the private reg transferring over to the new car. Is it simply a case of filling the relevant form(s) in from the DVLA website? As I'm guessing the garage won't be filling in the new keeper section off my current car, so will the confirmation of the swap, and the replacement registration number for my current car all be sent to my home address, which i'll then have to pass on to the dealer?

Thanks.

Be careful - I think when you sign over the car you sign over the registration and are relying on their goodwill to take the registration off and transfer it back to you.

You should have done it weeks ago so you can give the dealer the logbook with the original plate on it.
Your best bet is to go to your LVLO first thing in the morning and fill out the forms and start the transfer or you will lose the plate.

I know, my mistake really. I was under the impression you could just fill out the transfer form when you swap the vehicle over.

If the dealer is quick, and register the car, then they will own the reg plate and not you.

Do not part ex the car until the plate is off and you have the V5 back.

As everyone else says - if you can possibly delay for a week or so, you can get the plate transfer done before you sign away ownership of it.

get the garage to sign a document that says that they are having the car without the place and that they have no interest in the cherished registration and that it forms no part of the sale.

and i have heard of insurance companies and dealers nicking peoples valuable number plates so if they won't do the above then wait till you've got the retention certificate

Strange, I've done this a number of times with my private reg, and the dealer has sorted it for me with minimum fuss...it's never been a problem.
