Places to travel with a 1yr old
Discussion
We've taken a one year old to a villa on Lanzarote. Can't see us staying in a hotel for a good few years, villas from now on.
We've also taken a 1 year old off-roading and camping round the North Western Fjords of Iceland.
I wouldn't want to fly more than 5 hrs with our kids I don't think - it's alot of hard work to keep them entertained and therefore quiet.

I think that your 1 year old may find the heat and humidity difficult to cope with in Thailand.
Young 'uns don't self regulate their body temp as efficiently as adults do.
I've travelled to Thailand many times with my kids and it is indeed a great place to take them. However, I do think that 1 is perhaps a little bit too young for them to deal with the climate issues.

Many thanks for all your comments, i think the flight advice is probably best to listen too! This is my first child so i don't realy know
I just got back from Goa and at the hotel i stayed at there were a lot of families with young children, even babies however at Goa airport on the return flight one family had a poor little lad who was being sick and didnt look happy at all. I guess it was a long flight home for them

Our little lad is 2 in a couple of weeks and we've kept the holidays to the UK for now. We did think about going abroad, but ultimately the only reason we wanted to go abroad was for our enjoyment a not our little boy's enjoyment.
We'll leave it a year or two longer then go abroad. The idea of putting my little lad through long journeys, airports, sweltering heat and humidity so that I can have a foreign holiday doesn't seem very fair, especially as he's going to get no more out of it than a UK holiday, and he's certainly not going to remember any of it.
Of course UK holidays will limit it you to the 3 days of sunshine we get

Some good points above. Depends if the holiday is for the two of you, or for "the family".
If the former, talk very nicely to Granny & Grandad and leave the little'un with them for a week, while you guys go and pamper yourselves on a nice beach.
If the latter, then agreed that long flights and high humidity probably won't be very nice for the kid.

We went to Cape Town when our son was about six months old....obviously no jet lag and the flight is at about ten at night so it works very well from a "bed time" perspective. We got our son to sleep in the pram in the airport and then he woke up and played when we got on the plane...went to sleep after an hour or two and had eight hours kip.
It's warm but not humid obviously as it's coastal, we rented a villa with A/C. First day there we went to Toys R US...bought a baby bouncer etc and gave them to the lady who cleaned our villa when we left. Worth the money which in terms of the cost of the holiday was nothing but helped keep him amused.

Babies are easy as they just sleep. Terrible twos up to about 5 is where the plane boredom is difficult to manage. We went to the US this year, my youngest was just 6 and she was fine for the 8-9 hours. With a baby just as easy, but I'd avoid anywhere too humid as previous poster says.

Wise words! Our son is now two and number two due any day....we won't be going anywhere on a plane for a while! Absolutely no interest. We got back from Tenerife a couple of weeks ago, I wouldn't fancy flying that much longer with our 15 month old. He did sleep a bit, and was generally pretty good but he was definitely fed up on the way home.
As for destinations, we had a cracking time as it was very family friendly. We also went to cornwall earlier in the year and loved that too.
Definitely would stay in a villa though, makes all the difference for them to explore and gives you the space too.

Thailand is an absolutely fantastic country to take a baby, they are extremely child/baby friendly. We are here with our 5 month old and he is having a great time playing in the pool, receiving copious amounts of attention from cute crowds of Thai girls and just generally sleeping.
Heat is not a problem, never too far from a fan, pool, a/c etc
Thailand generally has overnight flights too so they should sleep most of the journey.

So far as little un's They have been to Malaysia,Thailand,Zante,Cyprus and the Maldives. Night flights are good as the kids go to sleep.
we took ours to dahab in egypt. stayed ina 5 star place with own diving on site. I was able to go diving first thing and be back in time for brekky etc each day. flight was easy we just kept him awake as long as we could and he slept most of the way there and back. he was 10 months at that point. I would want to go much more than 4 hours though for reasons posted above.
