alarm is suddenly going off all the time

Hi

Alarm has been fine for 2 years but has suddenly started going off all the time, for no apparent reason, and thats even with the roof on.

Is it possible that the movement detectors need cleaning? If so where are they!!?

Or are there any earth connections I should check?

Could be that the siren is ed! is it a META-System? Mine did that last year - I disconnected it and it still went off imtermittantly! New siren was the answer - from Carl Baker. His details are on here somewhere or try www.tvruk.tv

Hi, Your profile doesn't say what "age" your Chim is. The vast majority only have "one" movement detector. It doesn't use optics, so it doesn't need cleaning, its a microwave emitter/movement detector located in centre of car behind gearchange/door opener. It doesn't usually cause any problems.

The other suggestion about the Siren is probably nearer the mark. Earlier Forums have usually shown that the Sirens are the weakest-link!!

the alarm on my 93 chim suddenly went beserk last year. An alarm having a lifespan of over 5 years is considered good so you may just need a new one.

Mine too went bananas (at 6am on the 5th of Jan) and was later declared dead by the 4th emergency service.

Peninsula replaced mine....

funny you should say that. 3.30am in the middle of winter, I am stood outside in just a pair of shorts that I have pulled on - working on the car with a torch and trying to remove the grille to get to the sodding siren. Eventually get in (25 minutes later with the neighbours less than impressed, cut the wires and.........................the thing is still going. in my hand!

soon shoved it in a bucket of water and that stopped it.

similar experience. stood outside in my shorts in the middle of winter, just starting to drizzle a bit, first day back after xmas, and I knew the phone call to work to explain why I wanted to work from home would result in weeks of ridicule for "buying one of them unreliable cars", only 2-3 weeks into ownership of our first tvr and I wondered what I'd let myself in for!

a few more months down the road, and I know what I let myself in for..... things like hooning home to a V8 soundtrack with no roof in the evening sun last night more than make up for it....

ok, so I'm a little "friendlier" with my chosen dealer than I've been with other cars I've owned, but they're great, and helpful, and put up with my newbie questions....

I have heard that the two door button things that also operate the interior light (in the body about a foot forward of the back of the door at the bottom) are also connected to the alarm in some cases. There are (should be) black rubber pads on the doors that these push against, and if the pads are missing it may be that the doors are pushing the buttons enough to alarm the car but some movement (wind perhaps) is enough for the alarm to think that one of the doors has been opened and therefore set the alarm off.

Totally correct and something I should have added - The door switches ARE problematic and part of the Alarm system (standard fit).Good one Chimyellow.!!

yes, good one. the drivers door switch in mine was no helping once the new alarm was fitted... and was also causing the interior light to "wink" at me..... one new switch (bad case of tin worm) and a new black pad on the door and all seems ok again.....

Thanks for all your suggestions. I reduced the sensitivity today and it was fine in the drive for about 5 hours -- much better -- but then went off again. 'spose i could reduce it further, but doesnt seem the right approach. Will ask at TMS when its in next week.

For the moment i am leaving it with the microwave switched off but holding the remote down longer and seems fine.
