Good afternoon to you all.

I am looking for a couple of tyres for the front of my Mondeo (Mk3) and, pleasingly, I can get some for around £70 each from Black Circles.

http://www.blackcircles.com/order/tyres/search

I was looking at some of the more premium tyres (Toyo, Yoko, Uniroyal, Avon or Pirelli for example) and wondered if anyone had experience of any of these. I am more concerned about wet handling than anything else (noise and wear doen't really bother me).

Thanks for your time.

Get the best you can afford.

Tyres are your only contact with the road and as a result are rather important.

I always like toyo proxes in the wet myself.

Not a great deal of experience with other premium brands though. I had some Avon ZZ3s that were rather good as well.

Make sure you nominate a good fitter!! The last time I ordered off BC I used the local one. Big mistake. Sample "One of your rims was a bit buckled so I had a go at straightening it with a hammer! !!!! This was an AMG Mononbloc......

They also failed to balance ant of the four rims. I then had to try two more places to get the balance right.

I now always to a local place that supplies and fits to the local trade - much better service and just a cheap.

Just a thought.

All true, just be aware that price does not always directly reflect quality or ability of the tyres.

If you're a reasonable driver and fancy a reasonable tyre at a reasonable price. I like these:

I always seem to say this, but I'm a huge fan of Vredestein: I had some Sportrac 3s on my old MR2 and in the wet they were incredible. The Ultrac Sessantas are also supposed to be good.

It's quite interesting that the P6000s seem to score rather low in all areas. I'd always thought of these as being quite a good tyre.

Thank you all for your replies. In essence, I may be selling the car soon but it needs new front rubber. I don't want to put crap on it in case I do keep it for a while, but likewise I don't want to spend too much. I have Yokohama S306 on at the moment and they seems to be OK and have lasted about 3 years and 25k miles.

PS That bit was a joke, but sometimes I do get too keen on wet roundabouts smile

I really like the Bridgestone Turanza ER300. Have them on my Mk3, had them on my Vectra, and two of my Astras. Very difficult tyre to beat for all round grip, wear and durability. No hesitation in recommending them to anyone.

they used to be awful in the wet, but i found they seriously improved when they redesigned the tread pattern to have circumferential grooves.

I remeber having a set on my old car, and during a torrential downpour the car felt exceptionally planted on a water logged motorway. A friend in convoy commented how he could literally see my tyres plowing the water out of the way.

Always thought they were a great tyre for the money

For a regular saloon like a Mondeo you may as well just look out for a good offer from eg national, ats, kw ft etc and buy a mid range tyre probably under £50 each.

Avon are owned by national and not great, toyo proxy are cheap because they are rubbish, Yokohama cheaper tyres tend to be awful, there seems to be a lot of very poor recommendations about tyres on forums presumably from people who bought them hence think they are great ie it was their choice.

I thought Avon were owned by Cooper. Where have you seen they are owned by National?

I'd also highly recommend the sportrac 3, had them on my Saab and they are fantastic in the wet, they're also fairly cheap. Have a look ay the auto express tyre test from a couple of years ago.
