Bike engined car, gear indicator.
Discussion
Hi, I'm looking at fitting one of these over the winter but I've spoken to a few people at trackdays who can't get theirs to work properly. Apparently the system uses a wheel-speed sensor, which doesn't work on the smaller car wheels.
So, has anyone on here fitted one and what would you recommend?
The one I'm looking at is the Acumen digi gear. I'm on my phone so can't post a link.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Not got any direct experience of these but from what I can gather, they suffer if the "wheel" sensor is mounted on the prop shaft due to the frequency of the higher revolutions. However, they generally work ok on the wheel, as long as the wheelspin element is dealt with by either using a driven wheel or allowing a second or two for everything to settle down.
What sort of gearshift do you use? If you use an electronic shifter, a counter with auto reset on the neutral light feed might be a better option? I've been looking for a while but I've discovered that counting to 6 isn't too taxing, even on track (no jokes about being Cornish and fingers etc please!).

I don't have the acumen digi gear thing, but do use a speed sensor on the front wheel which works fine with the speedo'. Wouldn't have thought the wheel size would be an issue. So, has anyone on here fitted one and what would you recommend?

HOW MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just looked at these on the web, £75 + P & P - has to be some sort of a joke, for £139.99 you can buy a complete Acewell digdash (Ace 3252) which does speed, tacho, shift light, gear indicator, water/oil temp, volts, clock, fuel gauge etc etc - no comparison!

It also removes the retard on 1st gear for the Hayabusa.
Is a little sensitive to problems with the voltage regulator and the gear sensor itself can be sensitive to heat in a mid-engined configuration.

Not sure if this will work on your engine, but I have the GIPro fitted on my car - no problems and very easy to set up: http://www.bikersdiscountstore.co.uk/gear-indicato...
Thanks for the replies lads. Some food for thought there.
Fury Lee - Yep, that's the one I was going for until this thread and probably still will. I'll bear in mind where I position it now, thanks.
Stubby Pete -
I won't mention your fingers. My gearshift is "stick", with a flat-shift system. It was electronic with a ram but, the previous owner had problems so took it off. I do the counting thing, which is fine early on in the day but, once I start pushing on, I'm too busy concentrating on the track, my braking points and clenching my arse, to keep count
.
Huff - Helpful tip there, thanks. I'll remember that if I have any strange problems with it.
Colin - OK, thanks. Just what a couple of people have mentioned although their problems could be any number of things by the sounds of it. Such as those mentioned by Huff.
Russ - Your post has got me thinking. I'm not bothered about the price of the Acumen. I know they work well on bikes and are a very compact unit but, the point about the digi-dash is a good one. My car only has the R1 tacho and a water temp gauge. Looks a bit naff really, especially since the R1 tacho has reset buttons etc on it for trip computer, etc. These don't work now obviously so are irrelevant. The engine management light is constantly on too, maybe the power-commander? or simply the fact that things are probably missing from the loom. Anyway the correct way to do it would be proper digi-dash but, I think by the time I got one working I'd miss next years trackday season!
I don't even have senders for half the info on the screen, such as fuel, etc. I'm going to bear it in mind though. I'm busy with a house until the new year then my car is having a body off refurb whilst tackling the electrical circuits and mods I want to make. I know deep down it's the way to go but, I think it maybe too much hassle for this winter. I want to be on track by March again.
Kiwi + spdpug - Thanks I'll look into both of these. I just want the one that's the simplest to fit and is reliable basically. My dad's an auto-electrician (well he restores classics actually) but, I hate keep roping him in to sort my probs. He's 64 now and busy enough!
PS. Nice cars guys!
Ah well, I'll weigh it up over the next month or so. Thanks again.
I've heard someone mention the locost builders forum before. Anyone here use it? Is it on P'heads or it's own site? My car is a Global GT light, so not caterham style or anything. Will that forum have much info of use to me do you think?
Cheers, Mark.

Not that I use it for building stuff, but its a great read and friendly members.

I've seen the aforementioned unit working using the prop as a pickup and it's shockingly bad. The response time can be up to 4 seconds as slow speeds.
I'm sure it would work better using a wheel instead of the prop, but my friend has not got round to extending the cable yet to find out.

Just to warn you, not all bike engines have a gear position sensor on the box. IIRC it's only fitted on the 'Busa and some of the gixxer 1000 models. I don't think Honda, Yam, etc. have them - or they didn't.Fury Lee - Yep, that's the one I was going for until this thread and probably still will. I'll bear in mind where I position it now, thanks.
