Indeed

Key doesn't let you unlock anything and the log book is missing.

Now this could be just co-incidence... but...

If those primered patches (the bonnet edge in particular) are rust repairs, then it has rusted in similar places to an E46 I once had the misfortune to own...

The doors thing is probably the battery, but still, not cheap enough for the state it's in IMO!

Would probably spend the £3 for a keyfob battery to check, would stop the ad looking so dodgy!

Depending on which key that has, it may not be possible to (easily) change the battery.

The batteries on the later (post 200 IIRC) fobs are rechargeable, and charge via an induction loop (a ring around the ignition lock).

If the vehicle has been laid up for an extended period, the keyfob battery can go flat, especially if it's a few years old and past it's best.

Only way to charge them, is to take the car for a long run (unless you want to split the keyfob open and replace the battery).

ETA:

Old type:

Later type (rechargeable):

I was thinking more in the same way that E39's etc. are a pain to unlock when the car's main battery is toast... not defending the car or saying its the buy of the centuary or anything just thinking out loud..
