I know insurances have gone up a lot recenly, however the quotes I am getting are just absurd.
I'm looking at buying a 2nd car, an Alfa 164 3.0 V6 but all my no claims are currently tied up on the Alpina. The B10 is covered fully comp, is by no means a cheap car to insure and I pay £725 for it.
Internet quotes on the alfa are coming out at £720 for the cheapest, third party only with limited mileage of 4000. Tried going through Adrian Flux who cover me on the Alpina and their best price is £659.

I fail to see how the Alfa is almost as much as the B10 to insure, for a car woth 10 times less, with half the power, 3rd party only and limited mileage.

All I can think of is to get the silly quote for a couple of months, then find a more reasonable multi car policy in January once the Alpina is up for renewal. However before trying this I need to get muli car policy quotes to ensure they are not horibly expensive.

How does everyone else handle insurance on 2nd cars? Just buite the bullet and build up no claims, or is there a way to combine the two?

Call a broker - not online.
Try Saffron or Adrian Flux (might need their specialist team)

You are looking for a mirror policy; they will be able to advise - it will mirror your no claims on your main car. Some conditions around it but generally good news and good value.

With an Admiral multi-car policy you can add the second (or in your case primary) car in as and when it's current policy expires.

Have you tried them?

Is it worth ringing your current insurer and asking them? I'm with Admiral for mine and they have mirrored my no-claims across my multi-car policy, Direct Line offered a similar thing when I was with them.

i had the exact same problem.

my no claims were being used on my S3 and when i was offered an E30 325 sport for £200 i picked myself up from the floor and ran to the nearest cashpoint to throw cash at the guy.

It was only a month later when the insurance company found i was trying to use the no claims i had on the S3 policy (i was unaware you couldnt use it on 2 policies) they upped the premium on the 325 to just under £2000.

Therefore my bargain car of the century had to be sold frown still miss it now.

Some insurers will reflect a no claims bonus - worth investigating that?

On the same suject, what happens if you continue with two cars and two seperate policies?

Do you then have, say '9 years no claims' and a '5 years no claims'. Must be difficult for the insurers to monitor and police this...

I have tried Adrian Flux who are my current broker, they quoted £659. I'll give Saffron a try (never heard of them before).
Just tried Lancaster classic policy, £2316. Not too sure how they worked that one out biglaugh

Will get multi car policy quotes from Admiral and see if they are any better.

Are you sure they were quoting you a mirror policy? You normally have to be really explicit. Brokers are generally better at finding them as not all providers allow them.

Edit: my main car is an A6 and with full no claims, etc and business use + wife is about £540 a year via Flux. A Saab 900 turbo (group 18 I think) on a mirror policy was £175.

What age is the car?

Assuming it's over 15 y.o. and you don't need it for business use, you probably need to get a copy of Practical Classics (other classic cars mags are available...) and trawl the specialist advertisers. Or at least, that's what I did for my 635 and the E-class.

Admiral multi car policy is £1147 on the Alpina and £573 on the Alfa (mirroring the no claims) confused
I really don't get these quotes, I'm 31, live in a reasonable post code, garaged overnight, I don't do all that many miles, have 1 conviction (SP30) in 2006 and one non fault claim (3rd party covered the cost, no injury). Even maxing out the excess doesn't bring it down by much. confused

Looks like the 164 just isn't to be....

I was also looking at Grand Cherokees for the winter (I know, completely different), without any no claims I have a quote of £227. I guess it will be a Jeep and not an Alfa for my 2nd car, if only I can find a GC nearby and that isn't in a complete dog like the last 3 I saw.

Its 13 years old so not quite there.
Don't need buisness use but would have to include comuting.

I have a policy with NFU and they allow full no claims agains all cars added to it. A mate changed his insurers to them and enjoyed the same benefit on two vehicles so not just long term customers.

I've been trying to get cover for a second car recently.

Third Party only for a Granada/Scorpio 2.9, worth about £250 and covering max 3000 miles, no business use.

I spoke to Admiral, as I'm with Elephant and they wanted over £400 to add on cover for the 2nd car.

Best quote I got anywhere else was £622.

Thats with a clean license, been driving 10 years, no claims at all and living in a low risk area with the car in residents parking area !

Absolute joke.

Others will answer the rest of the post.

This bit is because an Alfa driven at 30mph through a bus queue full of people will do just as much damage as a B10 driven at 30mph through the same queue.

Insurance reflects the damage you can do with a vehicle much more than the damage you can do to a vehicle.

You could give A plan in Thatcham a call. I had the same issue although it was insuring a 3rd car and they offered the same NCB as we had full NCB on the other two.
