My 450se - mica red etc ( full details and spec on www.beastandgrowler.co.uk)

I have what i thought to be a good file of old receipts etc and even the original sale receipt...

However when getting some work done at a reputable dealer ( they did some excellent work on my griff and other friends cars )

The guys have got my knackered gearbox out so it can be rebuilt which is a good thing but then they stripped the engine for me to have a look and see what needs doing !!!!!

HELP !!!!

It looks like some work has been done and not all of it makes sense ??

My rings are 93mm not 94 mm
I have Huge valves !!
my capacity is 4350 not 4500 !!!
The cam is from a carburetor engine not a fuel injection

I wont bore everyone with all the rest of the work that needs doing / replacing but the biggest issue playing on my mind is the 4350cc rather than 4500cc !!!

Has anyone any history on the car or had similar problems ??

Look forward to all your thoughts ( and prayers ! )

Thanks

Ty & The Growler

OK so you're 61cc down on the 4441cc standard which would appear to be accounted for by the smaller rings.

Your whole post appears to be very vague to me and less than half a story. No one asks a garage to strip an engine 'to have a look.'

Just read your compression readings so I can see why you had it stripped now. How big are the valves? Is it the original block?

Question...
How did you work out your capacity, you didnt mension the stroke, are you sure its a 4.35, did you ask the garage to stip the engine, did it have high mileage on it, was it running ok or is it well the box is out lets do the engine too, i would hehe, no point taking it out twice.
On my docs the engine in my SEAC is a 3.5l, how do you know the cam is for a cab engine.
If you have the cosworth omega pistons and need rings i would speak to John Earls, i got my new rings in a few days and they can only come from the states.
I wouldnt be worried about the size of the motor, just get it put back togeather correctly and running right with the correct bits inside and im sure it will put a smile on your face

Hey guys - thanks for the replies

Barrington I will ask the guys at track v road about the pistons - they are one of the only things that seem ok !!!

IF YOU ARE READING THIS Track v Road you can always make sense of my ramblings lol

JR - you spotted the other threads - compression down and was driving like a bucket of nails !! Sorry it was vague i was just chuntering out loud !!

From what we have found so far i need :

Cam

Followers

Inlet valves

Exhaust valves

Timing chain

Timing sprockets

Piston rings

Big end and main bearings

Oil pump

All gaskets and seals

Head bolts

HO HUM DONT TELL THE WIFE !!!

The cam appears to have a card profile so maybe the engine is god only knows what and i understand bits have been sent to dom at tvr power for matching and thoughts.....

Graham - now theres a thought - they may have shoved one of those in who knows !!! I wouldnt be so fed up if that was the case

I have emailed richard the tvr club archivist to see if they have any history so hopefully he will come back to me unless you guys know wnyone else i should try ???

Campbell / Cambelt - nice profile pic - i recognise one or two of you !!
The mileage was at 80,000 and i had lost fourth gear and was struggling with second so had to have the box out anyhow and i had a recent compression test on a rolling road which showed two very high results on numbers 2 and 6 ( 220 and 240 against 175 average ! )
It also has quite a noisy drivetrain to say the least !

I agree with the smile on my face comment - Had a weddge when i was 21 and then a griff 500 so love the cars - Just more interested to see what has happened in the past and why it is the way it is !! ( Most of us probably never know the real picture anyhow but always nice to try and find out )

ANYHOO - THANKS ALL FOR YOUR THOUGHTS SO FAR AND I LOOK FORWARD TO MANY MORE :-)

That capacity would suggest that it has an 80mm stroke, which combined with a 93mm bore would give a 4,347 cc capacity. But why 93mm pistons? It's not a size I have seen referred to anywhere before. I think the early 390's were 93.50mm bore, and then everything went to 94.04mm. I'm not doubting their ability to measure, but in the knowledge of the usual variations in bore/stroke for these engines, I would expect some double checking.

It's Possible all 4.5 are only 4.35

Most numbers are rounded up, 400SE are all 3.9xxx plus the LR 4.6 is the same cap as there 4.5 engines, they are called to save the confusion on the crack bearing size. 4.6 is large journal 4.5 is small but they have the same bore and stroke.
maybe TVR did not want a 4.4 engine size, so rounded up again to 4.5

I've put xx as don't know the exact size.

Also look like the Rouse's 3.9's unit's had 93.5mm cylinder bores, so maybe yours is one of these, but with a different stroke.

The 390 engine was indeed 93.5mm bore, giving 3905cc (same crank throw as the 3.5).
I think I read that the 4.2 (as in 420SE) was the same bore with a slightly longer stroke... was the 450 yet another stretch of the same crank or was it a later crank forging? It could be that they machined each crank to give the longest throw possible, which would suggest that every engine of whatever size had a slightly different capacity.

It will be really interesting find out what engine spec this actually is, after Track v Road and Dom have had a closer look. smile

Normally capacity for 450 is given as 4441 cc, isn't it ?
