i've just discovered Johnny Cash!

I saw Ricky Warwick a few months ago and he played 'cocaine blues'.

So on Itunes I have just bought 'live from Folsom Prison', damn, this fella is good!

Any essential albums I should get? What is recommended?

The San Quentin prison album is pretty good too....other than that you can't go wrong with some of his greatest hits albums - Ring Of Fire: The Legend of Johnny Cash is the one that got me into his stuff - I wouldn't know where to start on his proper albums though...Think I might have to have a listen on Spotify

the folsom and san quentin prison recordings are essential cash, much more energy in the songs and some good banter. just make sure you get the extended cds as they're twice as long with some great ensemble tracks.

cocaine blues is my favourite cash track, wreck of the ol 97 coming a close second.

Think it was 'Give My Love To Rose' that got me listening to him, I don't listen to any other music of this type, but I love the great story telling ('Boy Named Sue' being another favourite.....)

The film 'Walk The Line' is worth a watch too....

I really like "American IV : The Can Comes Around". If memory serves, it's mostly covers which he did after the death of his wife. It's got his cover of a Nine Inch Nails song which is good, but not the highlight though.

My dad used to have 2 Johnny Cash old-style 8-track tapes that he played back to back ad infinitum which put me off him for a long time! However, having listed to his last recordings (One, Hurt etc) I am fully back on board and now boring my own kids senseless having him on in the car on a regular basis.

Yeah the american songbook albums are awesome(stuff produced by rick rubin). Unearthed V is probably the best but the others are worth a look. I reckon if you like johnny cash check out the early stuff by ryan adams and whiskeytown

Bought this down in Bristol yesterday to listen to in the car on the way back from a meeting. Absolutely terrific stuff. I'd heard the title track before (used to great effect in the last episode of Generation Kill) but other than one or two tracks the rest is brilliant too.
