Setting aside the obvious technological problems with such an idea, this will never become law.

Simply put - why should a passenger not make a call?

The dangers of phoning whilst driving are not only overblown but also more than adequately dealt with by pre-existing legislation which makes it quite, quite illegal to not be in proper control of your vehicle.

Even if avian porcines became the norm and this became law, I imagine that there would be a lively black market in removing such devices and refitting them just in time for the MOT.

You know what. I don't mind the idea in the slightest.

Do we really have to be in touch with the world 24hrs a day? Ban mobile phones from ALL public places too IMO smile

I'm not saying that making a mobile call while driving is not dangerous, but surely smoking while driving is worse? And its not illegal.

Just somebody in public office trying to make a name for themselves.

They'll appeal to the 'Something must be done!' majority, thus gaining support and media coverage, unburdened by the requirement to make a workable technological or legislative system because it'll never actually happen.

I have to say, I completely agree with this, and am amazed it has taken so long to see an attempt to block phone use.

On my bike, or scooter, I can see drivers hiding their phones below window level, and texting as they drive - look forward--look down---look forward---look down-----------look up etc.

As a compromise, I could live with verbal use, but this addiction to texting is effing scary, and I'd like to see it stopped.

What's wrong with nicking people for DWDCAA (or careless, or dangerous)?

Why do you need everyone's life interfered with, just so that we can free ourselves from the hassle of dealing with a minority of dheads?

This kind of "we'll do the thinking for you" bollucks is how you get people ceding responsibility for their actions on a grand scale; after all, if it's legal, it's safe and right, innit, cuz if it weren't, it'd be illegal, innit!

Legislate universally for the lowest-common denominator. Modus Operandi of the authoritarian socialist.

And how do you suggest we do that? It's already illegal, but how can plod actually spot people doing it, when they are hiding the phones out of sight? The only way to a conviction is if phone use is established after mong has run into the back of someone and their phone records checked.

You don't need to see someone's phone to nick them for DWDCAA. The law about phone use whilst driving is spasticated for the very reason you outline.

Imagine the scenario.....

You drop little Jasmin off at infants school where 10 minutes after you leave she slips down some steps breaking her arm and collar bone.

The school call your mobile but it is switched off whilst you drive to work.

You arrive at work with loads on your mind forgetting that you had to switch your phone off so you just leave it in your pocket switched off.

You go to pick little Jasmin up at 3pm to find that she is in hospital and social services have sent someone to watch her for the last 5 hours.

It's not a just a few dheads, there are loads of people doing this. Legislation has had zero efect on these people so the only way to stop them is by using blocking technology.

I would honestly, genuinely rather be in front of a bloke who is way over the drink-drive limited than one of these text-mongs.

If little Jasmin is that precious, why have they not got a work contact number ?

The same guy who came up with this also mentioned something about personal responsibility. That is just unbelievable.
