Carbon Canister

Have noticed that my carbon canister under the rear wheel arch has a hole in it. It seems to be about 1/2 to 2/3 full of carbon granules - does it actually do much anyway? Will I be OK to repair the hole and leave as is or does it need to be super airtight and full of carbon?

Just stick some tape over it. They're useless really, supposed to trap HC emissions from the fuel system.

I just found the one in mine about an hour ago.
