What does this part do?
Discussion
I have finally managed to locate my phantom engine rattle to this part.
It is the little pressed steel bar running inside the AUX belt tensioner spring
What does it do, should i replace it (my skin has only just recovered after replacing the alternator) or can i just pull him out?

(Part being held up with punch)
Cheers

I assume the alternator bolts on in one fixed position and all the tensioning is done by that spring? Otherwise it could be that you need to slacken off the alternator mounts and move the alternator round to take up more slack in the belt. This would put more pressure on the spring. It may be lack of tension making that little bit rattle.
Otherwise I'm stuck for ideas. The spring should be doing any adjustment of the belt tension, so it should be pretty fool proof.
To check the belt is about the right tension, hold the middle of the longest stretch of belt (as in the bit where it's furthest between 2 pulleys) between your thumb and forefinger and try to twist it. If you can only twist it about 45-90 degrees it's tight enough. If you can easily twist it over 90 degrees it needs more tension.

Yep, all adjustment is taken up by the spring.Otherwise I'm stuck for ideas. The spring should be doing any adjustment of the belt tension, so it should be pretty fool proof.

Will check it tomorrow and apply blue tak to shut it up for the time being.
