I have finally managed to locate my phantom engine rattle to this part.
It is the little pressed steel bar running inside the AUX belt tensioner spring
What does it do, should i replace it (my skin has only just recovered after replacing the alternator) or can i just pull him out?

(Part being held up with punch)

Cheers
Oli

Is there a part missing that should hold it up then? (Assuming the punch isn't OEM!)

Is there something to hold it up when the punch isn't there?

Is it to stop the spring over-extending and coming unseated? I'd try sticking a short nut and bolt through to hold it in the same manner the punch is, assuming that it will be under tension when the belt is on so it doesn't rattle.

Just so you know, this isnt my pic.
Mine is rattling whilst the engine is running.
So it would seem the belt is adjusting wrong?

I assume the alternator bolts on in one fixed position and all the tensioning is done by that spring? Otherwise it could be that you need to slacken off the alternator mounts and move the alternator round to take up more slack in the belt. This would put more pressure on the spring. It may be lack of tension making that little bit rattle.

Otherwise I'm stuck for ideas. The spring should be doing any adjustment of the belt tension, so it should be pretty fool proof.

To check the belt is about the right tension, hold the middle of the longest stretch of belt (as in the bit where it's furthest between 2 pulleys) between your thumb and forefinger and try to twist it. If you can only twist it about 45-90 degrees it's tight enough. If you can easily twist it over 90 degrees it needs more tension.

Yep, all adjustment is taken up by the spring.
Will check it tomorrow and apply blue tak to shut it up for the time being.

So why would it have started rattling?

Because you've lost the part of the assembly your pin is replacing?

Bearing gone in the tensioner? One of the other pulleys loose? I imagine the belt is making it rattle so it could be anything that affects the tension of the belt.

The rattle is coming from the tensioner the little blade that sticks out. The belt feels right. It does need changing soon as it looks a bit old, but i may just weight until it goes. Ahh bangermotics.

I am thinking it is meant to be attached to the main body. (inside the spring) I may have bent it when i was refitting it a while back.

The principle is that if it's rattling it hasn't dropped off, if it drops off & the car still runs it wasn't anything important!

Can't you have a look at a similar model of car to see what should be there?
What model is it? there must be someone on here who can look at their car for you.
