I own a pajero 3.5 v6 that recently is showing valve & cam issues, i would like to drop in a v8, probably 4.2.
can anyone give me any tips or suggestions regarding gearbox, average labour costs, ideal engine type or just anything that can help.

Unfortunately, the std response is called for here, which is:

If you can't do it yourself, then there's little point in proceeding as the costs will be crippling.

(unless of course you don't care about how much it costs, in which case i'd have a google around specalist car modifiers in your area etc)

Well, if we assume that there isnt a V8 that will just drop in and couple to the trans then:

(1st £ is the least it could be, second the most it should be)

bellhousing adaptor and engine mounts approx £500 to £2000
rewire to suit new ems system approx £300 to £3000
secondhand engine: £300 to £2000
custom exhaust, cooling, and intake systems: £500 to £2000

so, the total conversion, somewhere between £1600 and £9000

pretty big £££ window there, without further research!

Fairly common conversion where I live in Malaysia, but it would be for another Jap engine, don't have access to my mechanic at the moment as I am working away, but do a search for Malaysian half cut's and you will find someone in Kuala lumpur offering something to fit a Pajero, what they would do here is an engne gear box swap and fabricate a new prop shaft, so no bell housing conversions.
I know my mechanic has put a SR25 into a Terrano, cause he want to that to mine, but the car handles so bad I don't want more power in tha Chassie

I would email tinker-27 on this forum.

He specialises in v8 conversion and runs a 7.0 litre twin turbo v8 mazda rx7.

He could give you an idea on conversion costs.
