What are the symptoms if the rear shock absorbers are worn out?

If rear shocks are worn when going around a corner with a mid-corner bump the back end will tend to jump out, if they are really worn you will note the rear suspension will continue to move after going over speed bump instead of the motion being damped immediately. Also under hard braking over rough surfaces the wheels will tend to skip over the undualations. This is what I have found from personal experience, someone else here can probably give a better description.

When you have people sat in the back or a boot full of stuff the car will really wallow up and down after going over bumps. It can be quite amusing but unfortunately does have an affect on handling so new shocks are a good idea.

If you don't mind getting dirty, you can often tell they are gone by getting under the car and looking to see if they have leaked any oil.

drink here we go

I assume by shocks you mean the damper.
As the spring does the shock obsorbing and the damper controls the spring.

I mean the bit that everyone refers to as the shocks, so yes, the dampers. Nobody calls springs 'shocks' do they? Have you blutacked that shock on your aux belt yet?

If they're really, truly fked, you'll feel and hear the wheel 'patter' as it goes over bumps.

If you know what you're doing, you can 'bounce' the corner of the car by hand and tell whether the damper is reasonably fit by the way it returns to the static position, and if you take the wheel off, you can often tell a shot damper visually, by the fact that there will be stains on the damper tube where the oil has leaked out.

Of course, there's a fair chance that the average local tyre and exhaust place will tell you that they are worn, even if they aren't.

...and your tyres, and your brakes.

I think that was the point of his comment.
