Hi guys

My Saxo hasn't been started for about a month, and i started it today to prepare it for sale tomorrow and it has been billowing out white smoke for about 5 minutes, it didn't smoke at first until i revved it and now its like an iron!

Any idea why? Could a seal have gone? Coolant is fine!

Might just be condensation/water in the exhaust, give it a run & see what happens.

What is the coolant header tank like? Any smell of hydrocarbons? Any emulsion showing?

Oh ok, in which case just let it run, rev it it up a bit & get it up to temperature. It probably wont stop all together but should get less & less. It's just water burning off the inside of the exhaust as it gets hot.

I've just ran it upto temp.. still got smoke.

The smoke doesn't smell of any hydrocarbons mate.. if thats what i remember it is from school! Lol

It just feels like steam, i've just shut the car off now. Will restart it in an hour or so and see if it still happens?

If the weather there is like it is here, then it'll be cold and humid. The steam is from the air.

Facepalm.

I'm voting condensation and don't worry about it.

Hi mate

I suspect it's condensation too.

RE: Header tank, I googled it for you. Looks like it's built on to the left side of the Radiator (Yellowy tranluscent plastic resevoir on side of radiator. Looks like it has a Black Plastic Cap).

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES open it when car is warm/hot or it could chuck high pressured scalding hot water over you which will take your skin off. Just be careful smile

Mate, fear not, I used to get loads of condensation steam from my VTR when I first fired it up. Used to last up to 10 miles or so driving. So sounds fairly normal.

Check under you oil cap (when engine is turned off) for any White/creamy mayonaise type substance and report back. I'm not insulting your intelegence when I ask if you know where your oil cap is, but if you don't, black cap on the top of the engine smile

I got the same thing on my previous Citroen Saxo, except it *was* a head gasket that had blown.

Still, it ran for about a year that way, I just had to top the coolant up with water once a week.

I'd get it checked personally, if only for peace of mind. smile

You laugh!!!! BUT....

We do work for major manufacturers.
Very in depth technical visualisations.

Anyway, I got one of my colleagues a cheap runabout as his car went kaput.
On asking him a couple of weeks later how the car was going, he said "yeah, great I'm realy pleased with it - but is there a quicker way to put the oil in?".

I said, "erm, what do you mean?" (and Im NOT making this up!).

He replied, "...well the hole for the dip-stick is only small and it takes ages to top it up!

100% true. How we laughed. LMAO!
