I have been fitting the exhaut today and have noticed that the cat touches the bell housing on the passenger side but is a couple of cm clear on the drivers side. Is this normal ?

thanks

regardless if its normal or not its not a good idea. I would seriously consider some heat protection between the cats and the tranny. I understand why the factory runs the exhaust the way they do in England, with your requirment for Cats. But if you are fourtunate enough to live where they are not required I question the circular route. just run the exhaust off the heads in one plane above the frame and tranny out the back. Lee

It looks like the header on the L/h of the photo is not seated properly/distorted as they don't seem to be even when compared to the centre line of the engine.

I am sure it should not touch.

Mine run closer on the l/h side but do not touch the gearbox so i guess its not made correct the factory now supply the system with a three bolt flange and bolt in cats. Also mine was 111 D/B so no good for track so i have had to mod it anyway. keith

Heat protection will only work if there's a air gap.

Clive is certainly correct about the air gap. I know you folks with the requirment for cats are in a bind space wise and I know the factory has given a good effort to try and make cats and sound levels work. Goodness thats a lot of heat right next to the clutch tranny and inlet air. Somebody has to have an idea of how to get some space between the cats and all those critical componets. Lee

I have sent an email to Richard so will find out in the morning if it is out of line. I took the exhaust off again and refited and found that it still touches the bell houseing. I am so close to the first engine start of the LS7 (after 6 months without the car and missing vmax yesterday) but have faith in Ultima's customer service in always sorting little issues.

I have ordered the following to control some of the heat.

Ultima also do a very nice cold air system for the gtr that encloses the rear clip scoop and seals an air intake box.

They have a new moulding which is bonded inside the clip. It picks up fresh air from the side grills above both fuel tanks. The AC condenser is moved more vertical to allow the air to pass. The moulding then ducts the air to an inlet box around the air filter.

There is a moulding for each of the GTR and CanAm.

Looks really well done.

Can't wait to see it finished mate. An LS powered GTR is on my shopping list when time/life/funds permit!

Hopefully all sorted with a new system from Ultima. Also the cold air feed on the GTR comes from the air scopp and not the sides. Will take some pictures when complete.

Ah, that is a great idea and worth waiting for. Are you going to do and write up a new build site?

OK Gys...from the Factory..my interpretation from the pictures is...

The GTR version of the new air scoop system is essentially a new moulding that fits/bonded into the roof of the rear clip and takes the air from the central scoop as per normal, and is designed to seal the airbox when closed.

The Canam version takes the air from the side scoops as per previously mentioned.

cheers

I expect so - though it does tend to make the build take twice as long!

I was so concerned after reading Clives emails that the chassis was made of cheese straws that I used a strut brace to hold it together! Sorry Pete but I used it to measure a few bits and left over from a mates 996!

However you have given me an idea!
