Come the New Year I'll be looking at selling my house and moving up from Notts to Sheffield. I have a few mates up that way and they've advised me to look at Broomhill and Crookes as options to rent somewhere.

Thought I'd throw it open to the local PH'ers to see if you have any more recommendations. I'm looking for 10 mins to city centre, access to the M1 (I guess J33 rather than 34) and any particular areas to avoid if I go a little bit further out.

Buy / Rent?

How old are you?

Crooks & Broom Hill are pretty studenty areas.

Selling and then renting - I made a mistake when I bought the place I have now and didnt research the area properly. I work from home and sometimes travel around the country visiting customers. So when I'm at home, it makes sense to actually like the area rather than like the convenience of it's access to the M1 hehe

I'm early 30's

Depends on many elements really.

Renting house or flat/apartment

Quiet or noisy

Garage, off-road parking, not bothered

If you want noisy with no parking space and students then Broomhill is the place.

If you want terraced with no parking space and students then Crookes is the place.

Oversimplisic maybe, exaggeration not really.

If the above are the sorts of areas your friends are suggesting then may I suggest Nether Edge. Just as many students, parking is still a pain but a much nicer area, better pubs, comedy club, nicer places to eat etc. IMHO obviously.

Crookes and Broomhill are nightmares for parking and traffic, I'd be tempted to look a little bit further out if I was you

Good shout, thanks

As an answer to the earlier post, I'd want space for 2 cars in a decent area that they're not going to get knocked about and I can park them off road - which probably means a house. Seem to see a lot of apartments and I'd probably want a bit more space. Nether Edge seems to be OK, what I'm leaning to though is somewhere that you can stumble back from town to, ie the taxi's dont bypass you at spilling out time as it's too far out (which is whats happening where I am at the mo!)

Nether Edge sounds about right then I guess.....two mins from town and if you want local, there's plenty of choice. Some of the newer apartment blocks have underground secure parking as well.

Sheffield is really a city of two very different halves.
Absolutely.

We currently live in Ranmoor and don't think we would move anywhere else in Sheffield.

We like it quiet and everything is on the doorstep.

Ace responses, thanks!!!

Perhaps try Hillsborough? You should get a bit more bang for your buck down at the bottom of the hill in S6 than you would in S10 / S11.

Any issues with match day traffic on the weekends??

I live in a village called ecclesfield, 15 minutes from the city center and two minutes from j35 of the m1. Couldn't be better for me, plus no students.

aye, not too bad ta. Hows yourself?

Oh, and if you want a lot more for your money house wise, try Sheffield side of Barnsley. Might be a little bit further out, but houses are cheap as chips!

As a landlord, fellow PHeader and Sheffielder allow me to offer my opinions...

If you want 2 spaces you'll have to look hard in Broomhill or Crookes as rentals are often terraced houses. Yes they may be studenty as well but pick the right road and you may find none. Certainly in Broomhill (some roads have a residents parking scheme) to have off-road parking you're talking bigger properties and bigger rents. If you want to stay in S10 try Crosspool or Lodge Moor where you may find a house or a flat with off-road parking or maybe a garage.

Nether Edge has varied property types and qualities, again mainly on-road parking.

I used to live in Greystones and the place gives easy access to town, slightly larger houses, some pre-war semis with parking and great local amenities and a short drive to the Peaks or across town to the M1.

Someone mentioned Sheffield being a city of 2 halves, IMO the SW is the best but the traffic is a PITA.I work 4 miles from home and leaving at 7.50am it takes me 30min to cross the city. Also, yesterday it took me 30 min at 7.30 to get to J33 M1.

So, outside of the SW you have the North of Sheffield (eg Grenoside, Ecclesfield) which are nice enough and offer easy acces to the M1 but don't have the feel of some of the areas mentioned above.

Hope this helps

ETA. Just re-read your original post, access to M1 is a PITA from this side of town, handy if you're wanting to get over the penines, not so much for anything else. Feel free to drop me a message if you'd like me to vet anything local, I run a lot so can adjust my route to suit.

You'd be suprised at the amount of off-street parking on offer on the way out of Broomhill, there are some lovely pieces of property around the area too.

I've lived there for 12 months now and so far quite like it..

- Quiet, but a short walk gets you a variety of local amenities
- I can be out in the peaks in ~15 minutes on my road bike
- The snake pass is on my door step
- Not had any problems with students yet, always an array of student clunge knocking about too wink

If i had to cross the city every day it would get very tedious, luckily i'm a short walk/drive away from the office and don't have to suffer the university round about traffic.

A pub called The York just re-opened in Broomhill too, food appears to be pretty good, good atmosphere and beers too!

Sorry I'm a bit late to this.

I'm living in the Brincliffe/Nether Edge part of Sheffield and think it's cracking (moved here about 18 months ago). It's not perfect for M1 access, but if you know a few cut throughs, going either north or south isn't too bad.
Few decent boozers round here, then it's only a 5 minute walk down the hill to Eccy Road (lots of food and drinking establishments). It's easy getting a cab home and only about a fiver from the city centre or train station.

I'd think Nether Edge probably attracts a bit of a premium for renting, so just search S11 and see what that brings up...also try Greystones as someone else has mentioned.

Nether Edge is very varied. It varies from the really nice (Kingfield Rd/Psalter Lane) to the not so nice some parts off Abbeydale Rd). Greystones is a good shout, I used to live at the top of Greystones Rd. There are a few new developments which have off-street parking.

Examples below

Last one is good value for a 2 bed. It has loads of parking and is 2 mins from Ecclesall Rd and 15 mins walk from town.
