I'm a bit bored at the minute, so it got me thinking. Where is the current benchmark for the Supercar, and where is it going?

With basemodel cars coming out like the 458 and MP4-12C that are turning out to be quicker than their Hypercar predecessors like the Enzo, what does this mean for the new range topper hypercars. You've got companies like Ferrari, McLaren and Lotus who are all in the middle of a range overhaul. Just how much quicker are their hypercars going to have to be? Are they talking Veyron quick, or even quicker?

Where do they go from there?

While I don't have any thoughts on what the next crop of hypercars will be like (other than jet-fighter complex!), I will say that while the 458 may be faster than the big brother Enzo, which is somewhat old hat in performance terms these days, I'd much rather have an Enzo than a 458!

What immediately springs to my mind is the Porsche Carrera GT, awesome hypercar thing yet not significantly faster than a 911 Turbo at a fraction of the price.

Not at the top end but the 70-150mph punch those things have is utterly breathtaking.

I haven't Googled it but I believe (although will happily take correction) that the 911 is actually faster to 60 and there's maybe only 10mph in it at the top end. Of course, once beyond 60 or 70 the Carrera will be quicker but the Turbo does 98% of the GT at 20% of the cost. Porsche will have to lift their game substantially should they dip a toe in the hypercar pool again.

How much do you want to spend?

For the money at each level nothing will get close to a

  • Nissan GTR (£60k)
  • Corvette ZR1 (£100k)
  • Ferrari 458 (£170k)
The best value of all is clearly the blisteringly fast Vette!

Which is lacking in performance and expensive compared to a decent Ultima

And indeed isn't that much faster than the GTR which is only just over half the price, is it?

On most roads an ultima wouldnt be quicker than a GTR. Besides which its a kitcar, end of, it isnt available off the shelf.

I would hazard a guess that on a twisty dry road the Ultima would be a fair bit quicker than the GTR as it is a lot lighter.

Not Veyron quicker in terms of top speed, but they'll have to be quicker than a 5 year old car (Veyron) round a track to be considered a step ahead. I hope the range topping McLaren turns out to be the best in the world.
