how long have you all owned your cars, how often do you change, and what's the longest period you've owned a single car for or what's the most miles you've covered in a car?

lets here it smile

only owned mine for a little over 2.5 years at the moment but won't be selling for the foreseeable future, covered 25k miles in it.

Ross.

Between a month and six, average around three months I guess. Only longer (up to a year or so) for one that's not a daily driver and racking up miles at a rate of around 5-600 per week. It is rare that I ever add more than 8k miles or so to a car before moving on/being distracted by something else.

It stems from buying my first car ten years ago for £2k, running it for 6 months and 12k miles, every minute not driving it was spent cleaning it beyond the point of sanity and selling it on for £2,800 without advertising it. That kind of set the template for my approach to car ownership to date and likely always will.

There are too many cars that appeal to me out there to stick with one for any significant length of time.

I've had mine for a little under 3 years and covered about 19k miles in it. Don't plan on changing it for a while (though I haven't checked my lottery numbers yet) - I haven't finished with it yet smile

Reasons I change a car - changed my first car because it was falling to bits (had that 6 yrs), my second car because it was about to (had that 3 yrs). I'll change this one for the same reason most likely, unless I get bored of it before then.

Is this current cars?

I mean, when I was younger I'd change cars every 3 to 6 months, then I increased that to annually, until I bought my first Chimaera which I kept for about 6 years or so and did about 25k miles.

Had the Passat for about 5 years now and done about 70k. Current Chimaera I've had about 3 years and done about 8k in her, just not had the time to use her as much as I ought to, but we don't ever aim to sell her.

Crappy Vauxhall Corsa = 2-3 months
Toyota corolla = 10 months
Ford Focus diesel = 27 months
Mazda MX-5 = 4 days (Crashed it, write off, gutted. I want another so so bad!)
MG TF = 2 months (Now owned by my dad, bought it from me because I was desperate to sell. He plans to sell it when soft tops fetch more money but hes kind of fallen for it)
Ford Puma 1.7 =2-3months and counting. (got a bargain, low milage, mint condition, no expense sparred in keeping it as new)

From that list you would think I like to change my cars often but thats not really the case. The corsa was a bag of crap and I just wanted something more solid. Sold the corolla because I needed a diesel, my monthlyilage had been tripled due to work. Sold the focus because I was getting bored with it and was having to fix it more and more frequently. I loved the mx-5 form the moment I first test drove it, unfortunatly I never spotted the nice patch of gravel in the road turning into a junction and didnt have the ability to catch it.
The MG just didnt feel well built, some call it character, I just wanted rid before it broke. Plan to keep the puma until I have paid off my loan in about 4 years time.
All my cars from the focus on have done 1000-1500 miles per month.

Had the 5 series coming up to 2 years, will probably hold on for at least another 5 if all things continue to go well as it is such a completely satisfying car.

Previous longest ownership was a Rover 416 SLi that I had from 1997 - 2003. Had the itch many times to sell it but was not the richest man at the time and it was cheap as chips to run.

1990: Cavalier 1600 GL, 2 yrs; 20k miles, written off
1992: Rover 820E 4 yrs, 50k miles, broke it
1996: Rover 820SI, 5 yrs, 100k, wore it out
2001: Audi A6, 3 yrs, 100k, got bored
2001: Chimaera 500, 3 yrs, 15k miles, Should have kept it, it was superb. This was used as a 2nd car.
2004: BMW 735 V8, 1 yr, 30k miles written off.
2005: BMW 740, 105k miles, 5 years so far,

Tend to buy cars and run them into the ground / wait for someone to write them off. 20 to 30k miles PA prevents me from running something special as a daily hack.
P.s: Accidents have not been my fault.

I bought my E30 325i sport back in 1994 and I've still got it.

I don't think I would ever give it up now.
