New Bathroom - How difficult?
Discussion
Morning all, sorry if is has been asked before, but i couldn't find anything.
Me and the misses are wanting to put in a new bathroom, and I wondered how hard it was to do myself? Nothing fancy, just old one out, new one in, like for like.. New tiles and lights etc..
Tiling I'd probably get a neighbour in to do it..

To actually fit the bath basin and bog into position would be simple, but to isolate the cold and hot feeds, pipe it all up, fit the correct taps, couple the w/c pan and cistern (most are close coupled now) and the wastes and not flood your house may be tricky. Dont be lulled into a false sence of security with the thought of flexi connections either. You could do all the fitting and then get a decent plumber in to pipe it all up!

I never thought the plumbing would be too difficult if we're just swapping like for like? As most of the stuff would be there already?
You still have to connect the pipes sticking out of the floor to the backs of the taps etc, and you can be sure they're not exactly where the old taps were. So you;ll need to be able to turn off the hot and cold water and make joints.Simpo Two said:

On a serious note, invest in some "ballofix" type isolation valves, at least if do have a leak, you can just isolate one part and not have to shut down the water to the whole house.
Have you ever applied silicone before? If not, have lots of toilet paper handy as it will go EVERYWHERE!
Good luck!

I'm of much the same opinion when I see a post saying 'I'm going to get my brother to photograph my wedding because he's got a camera and it will be free'.
However, leaks can be fixed and a DIYer can take a few days over the task. Yes, you can hand over the cash and get a man in, but any useless housewife can do that. The satisfaction for the DIYer is the achievement balanced with the risk. And of course if the DIYer overreaches himself and it all goes the way of the pear, then he can still call a man in - and the man then has the bonus of a secret chuckle at the feeble attempts of the pathetic amateur. So everybody wins really

Yep, some people are big enough to handle that - all part of the risk/reward/satisfaction equation. Except my system has a drain-off, sorry to disappoint.
Mind you the last two times I asked a professional plumber to quote for work, he didn't bother to reply so what choice do we lackeys have?
It's very odd; I have a great empathy for amateur photographers, and if they get stuck I enjoy helping them out. But if you're an amateur plumber you're just a 't
t' it seems... perhaps we need two forums, one where DIYers can swap notes, and one where the pros can get their cocks out and wave them about?

One thing we do want is a proper power shower with a pump, which I'd imagine I'd need to get someone to install
Dont be tempted to do this yourself, you'll need a minor works ticket if/when you come to sell.

We're in process of finishing off our new bathroom (no real progress, so I've not updated my thread) - I toyed with the idea of doing the whole thing myself for about 30 seconds before I laughed to myself and got someone to replace the suite.
Given the grief and struggle of the fitter, I'm pleased I did just that as I know he had nothing but problems with it as there are so many unforeseen things that could occur.
On the plus side, I know it's plumbed in properly and there are isolation valves in the right places.
The rest (boxing, flooring, painting, etc) we're doing ourselves.
Well, that's what I would do anyway.
