With the recession and all I have been testing the waters about getting a more economical Daily driver.

So I was looking around my local Ford dealer today at various motors and decided to let the nice salesman give me a PX quote on my car, so he does the usual walkaround it, writes down all the details etc and trots off to speak to his "manager" to get me "the best deal" laugh

5 Mins later he returns and tells me the best they can offer is £7.5k. At this point I moved away slightly from the car I am stood next to, which just happens to be the same year/colour/variant as mine with 20K more miles on it and ask him how come they are selling this one for £11.5k then ?

After a few secondes blustering his reply was "well sir thats only had 1 lady owner" laugh

Suffice to say I wont be getting a car from there.

ETA yes I do know about overheads but £4k seems a tad big to me

I agree, but be prepared to be under siege with dealers bleating about overheads, unrealistic expectations etc.

Still can't remember the last time I met with a poor car dealer.

To which the best response must be "So how much do you charge for one without a shagged clutch?!"

So they have the same car as yours for sale at the moment. Why would they want to fork out for a second one until the first is sold? unless it is a very very popular car?

Because they are a Ford main dealer and its a Ford car and they are advertising for clean tidy cars.

Did you go in with a specific car in mind, or just make a demand for a PX price? Serious question.

Dealer mark-ups seem to be unaffected by the recession.

I was just having a scout on ebay for BMWs and noticed a 52 plate 330Ci Sport at a BMW dealer for 10k...

I was honest and said i was just looking at what was available, he offered to do the quote I didnt ask.

I am not knocking the px value it just made me laugh when I was stood next to the car price at 11.5k

If you were serious, which you likely weren't, you would use the 7.5k as the start of negotiations. Dealer doesn't have to justify price of other cars just get a decent cost to change. Seeing a similar vehicle gives you an edge IMO in that there is a good possibility they could market yours at a similar price so there may well be plenty of negotiation but as I said I don't think you are a serious prospect.

I had already told him I was only looking and had no specific car in mind, he offered to do the quote, so why should I start negotiating.

My dad has just taught my 65 year old mum how to drive an auto and bought her one. She took to it immediately as every car she has ever had has had one forward gear and one for reverse. I would never buy a car which had had 'one careful lady owner'.

OK that's poor, but you're never going to get a good deal px with a dealer. You need to buy for cash - should get a good reduction on any windscreen price, and sell yours on autotrader or here. That way you do some of the work instead of paying someone else to do it.

Yeah, just think. Haggle hard and you could chop yours in, add say, £1500-2000 on top and drive off happy in the same car as you already have but with 20k miles extra on it. Bargain.
