argh starting problem

i was out in the car today all good until i got home washed/dried car so jump in to start it fires up fine go to drive and dies out fire it up again and revs die out and smells a bit fuelly i think so end up shoving it in the garage HELP!!!!!!!!!!


can i disconnect battery without alarm goin mental as not wanting to use car over winter

Wouldn't recommend putting it away if your having trouble as it may get worse, sounds like you may have just flooded it on start, probably just worth leaving it an hour and trying again.

As for putting away for the winter, I cant disconnect my battery without the alarm going off, but some people done have that problem, best course of action is to try! I have a little 12v batt pack that I plug into my cigarette lighter to stop my alarm doing off, or just leave it on an accumate? That way you can fire it up once a week to keep things ticking over.

Surley if a got it started it would be fine tho as I get it running then cuts out could it be a sensor that's fecked

Had same prob on my last car after washing(scooby).would fire up but as soon as you touched throttle it died,turned out to be mass air flow sensor.To test i disconnected sensor and it ran fine(dont drive )try the wiggle test you may be lucky

I had similar symptoms on my Alfa 166 ages ago - turned out to be the AFM

If you've just washed it I'd suspect some moisture somewhere in the electrical system - the coil packs sit in the middle of the V at the rear and can be problematic.

I'd reckon wet coil packs as well.

Blow them dry with an air line if you have one and you should be sorted.


And in future just leave it dirty and drive it more ..... you can't see the dirt from the drivers seat.

Do you have access to the S6 laptop software and a diagnostic lead? That's what I'd start with to see if there were any sensors out etc.

Dammit no I don't just hot the car two weeks ago so bit of a virgin with it at the moment

If you look below where the throttle linkage is you will see 2 black boxes with the HT leads going to them, try drying out with a hair-dryer (just don't tell the misses)
If that doesn't work let me know and I will lend you my diag cable so you can have a better look

I had the same with my 4.5 after washing it, took 20 mins with a hair dryer and we were up and going again.

Just as well as I was about to leave for a trackday and had an all day 1-2-1 instructor booked so if I had not made it I was looking at a £500 car wash.

No, it only happened the once, enough water had run down onto the coil packs to form puddles on top of them, the one and only time I rinsed the car off with the hose instead of the jet wash.
