Before I buy a new dslr - any 2nd hand P/H offerings

In the process of looking for my first DSLR (Borrowed a fellow Pistonheader's camera initially which was fantastic and a real help to me!, thanks Andrew)

Have done some research and for my requirements (shooting youth football and some dancing in the future) i'm looking to buy either a Nikon D3100/5000 or a Canon Eos500 with an additional Tamron 70-300 lens (Jessops deal) plus sd card.

But before I take the plunge, which will be tomorrow I guess, just wondering if any of you lot had a 2nd hand offering which may fit the bill (i'm in Hampshire)

Done the rounds at the camera shops and all great for detail and advice but a little short on wanting to haggle (even if it's a quid off i'll be happy!)

Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

Cheers Kinky, normally only checked out the classified for Z4MC's or Focus Rs's so will look beyond four wheels and delve further.

It makes me laugh! when your accustomed and drilled into car talk, digits and numbers such as E36, R26 and B7 RS4's all immediately resonate different images and thoughts into your mind, but a 60D! now that means naff all to me! Where is the latest copy of 'What digital SLR'

Canons line up goes like this

Entry:
xxxxD , current : 1000D

Beginer:
xxxD , current 550D, previous 500D (450D, 400D, 350D, 300D)

Intermediate:
xxD , current 60D, previous 50D ( 40/30/20/10)

Semi-pro
xD , current 5D2, 7D (5D)

Pro
1D and 1Ds. 1D to version IV (current), sports camera. 1Ds to version III , studio camera.

Note with the introduction of the 7D canon effectivly split the xxD line into a semi pro body (7D) and a more amature rebel pro body , the 60D.

Anything made in the last 2-3-4 years can produce stunning images and is worth a punt. Pay more, get more, more fps, more control etc.

Father-in-law had a an E39 525d (circa 163 bhp) sport a few, few years ago and devoid of 0-60 times/image/badge etc I loved it, beat the ste of of our 1.8 (non-turbo-weedy-125bhp) Audi A4 Avant!

Miniman, just seen your camera, looks lovely plus your local-ish, but even if i make you a 'you must be taking the ps offer' i've still to buy a lens plus SD card which takes it's above what i'd ideally want to spend.

Thanks for the breakdown, for me and the money I think i'll poss (depends on deal) go for a Canon EOS500d?! (beginner) although there's some big money to be spent on this hobby!

There is isnt there! (having just bought a 400L..)

A 500D is a great camera, get it and the kit lens (18-55IS) and add a longer lens later (55-250IS) and your done for a while , unless you have very specific intrests.

I'd also think about adding a nifty fifty (EF 50mmf1.8), limited but a superb lens and you wont buy sharper or faster unless you spend a lot more money.

Canon 350D with battery pack (handy if got medium to large hands) in great condition other than bit of dust in view finder.
Tamron 70-300mm
Canon 17-85mmEF-S USM
is what I started with and keep meaning to move on, for around £400 the lot if of any use (in Herts but welcome to came and have a play)

Just an update..

Went for a new Nikon D3100 in the end, got the camera and kit lens for £445 and for another £20 got a Lexar Premium 8GB card and Nikon bag.

Handled most of the mainstream makes and possibly prefered the button position on the Canon eos500 but what swayed it was the price/reviews and general feel of the thing. Chuffed!

Will at some stage require a longer lens(?? - 300) for shooting football but will post up in the next couple of weeks after i've come accustomed to the camera.
