Chassis paint help please
Discussion
I'm looking for a little advice on the best topcoat paint for the outriggers, I have the body lifted 4" and have now removed all the old powdercoat surface rust from the corners and used chassis clean, metal ready, por15 and por15 self-etch primer so what should I use over the primer I want it to be brushed on and it needs to be silver to match the rest of the chassis. The only thing I can seem to find is Hammerite.
Any help would be great

Chris,, Hammerrite & smoothrite are about the best thing out there, If you have missed a bit of priming it doesnt mater,,Why are you going to brush it, Use a spray can of smoothrite in silver,
There is no such thing as rust stopping paint,, But smoothrite never really goes off & really good against stone chips...

Thanks Goldie Smoothrite it is, the only reason for wanting to brush the paint is accesability even with the chassis raised it would be pretty tough to get to the back of the front and rear upper rails. I may do a bit of both. There is no such thing as rust stopping paint,, But smoothrite never really goes off & really good against stone chips...

Hammerite is thet fish eye finish smoothrite is the smoother finish, If you paint it with cans it does go in places hard to get a brush in , Brush it if your going to use hammerite because it wont show the brush marks up so much...
If you get stuck give me a shout might be able to give you a few tips...

Thanks Dave thats exactly what I was looking for unfortunaltley I have been out and bought the the Smoothrite silver spray and already have started. But I don't think it will make much difference as the topcoat is realy just cosmetic the por15 and self-etch primer should give it a good prection from the elements.

The reason outriggers are so prone to rust is they flex when driving causing the powder coating to loosen from e steel surface, most corrosion ocurring in the joint areas, the upper surface of the tubes sitting within the body cavity being vulnerable to sustained dampness and corrosion. The original outrigger mounting points through the diagonal steel brace have no drainage holes and trap water. If the outriggers do not have these drain holes its best to drill some to allow water to escape. When refurbishing I used rust preventer on exposed metal, zinc based paint as the sacrifical medium followed by a anti chip flexible paint used by most manufacturers to protect underbody areas. I've had my car from new and at the outset painted the outrigger tubes, especially in the wheelhouse area with good old fashioned underseal, as this area is quite a hostile due to stones being thrown up from the tyres. After 15 years the outriggers are in very good condition. I always favour underseal as the best final protection layer, it flexes, stays stuck and works. If painting with Hammerite it wont last long.
