Would I be mad?
Discussion
Next year, me and the OH are probably going on holiday somewhere like the Swiss Alps. Thing is, at our age we won't be able to hire a car (18-19, so if we were able to find somewhere that would hire one out it would be extortionate), and I'd much rather the freedom of having a car. Driving it with an overnight stopover somewhere in France isn't something that phases me particularly, but the car to hand...

A big part of me thinks it could actually be a massive laugh. I'm actually pretty confident that the car would make it there and back without a hitch. What I am slightly dubious of is that 'just in case'. I know that breakdown companies would write it off as 'uneconomical' and I'd be unable to get it back to the UK if it did throw something major, but should I just 'f**k it and go for it with fingers crossed and toolbox open' or just play it safe, fly out and not worry about being too free with movement?
The joy of having the car would be that we could stay in other places as well, actually. Sort of mini-roadtrip type thing I guess
Just wondering what other people would do really

How long have you owned the car and what problems if any have you had with it??
If you have any niggles get them sorted out between now and your trip...
If it is a reliable machine go for it.... A road trip around Europe is still a great adventure
If you go to Switzerland make sure you get yourself to Grindelwald and get on a train

Expensive.... but worth every single penny

Grindelwald is a place I've long wanted to go to, possibly because of Gran Turismo 2's influence If you have any niggles get them sorted out between now and your trip...

The more I think about it, the more I think it's probably worth doing. The car has had a few problems, but nothing that's left me stranded and that I haven't been able to fix myself. All life experience even if it does go horribly wrong
Are you planning on doing the trip so that you can do a road trip or because you want to visit the Swiss alps?
If it's the latter, then here is a very un-PH answer - Just get the Sleazyjet from Luton/Gatwick to Zurich (or maybe even Geneva) and hop on a train down to the alps. The transport system here is nothing like the UK: It's clean, punctual, reasonably cheap (especially in comparison to the price of everything else here), frequent and goes pretty much everywhere.
If you know where you might want to go, have a look here to get an idea of times, prices etc
