Probably one for tonyrec actually.

I'm in a village up North Beds way, quiet but on a B road, is one of the main routes to the drag raceway. Every Sunday we get the maxxed up boy racers speeding through to Pod, most doing 50 mph plus even though we have about 3 almost 90 degree corners in the village, theres also garden centre not far so we get all that traffic too, I'd say a majority doing in excess of 30mph (which is the village limit)
There have been 2 accidents in the past 3 months that I have seen, there must have been more that I have not seen. There are no speed controls in the village, just the standard 30mph signs.

Cant see how a speed camera will be that effective, they will just speed until they hit the sensor and then brake sharp to avoid getting caught.
Whats the answer?
Basically I'm getting fed up with it, next step would be to write to local councillor I guess?
Any ideas how they define a "hotspot" and how we as occupants of village can help?

well how about starting with some signs outside the village which say "Local Village coming up please slow down for children and old people", then 100 yeards further in "there are several highly dangerous bends within this village - please observe the speed limit"

then another one saying "x axxidents since y, be careful"

and then just see if it has any effect at all.....

MXDi,

Be careful what you ask for - you might just get it. It happened around our way - and the locals HATE what the council did.

The options for slowing the village road to achieve an average speed below the speed limit are few.

1) Speed sensitive limit signs.

Really good at slowing law-abiding normal drivers as they're much harder to miss than a regular 30mph sign - even the inobservant numpties can't miss these. BUT people have to cooperate.

2) GATSO.

Slows traffic at an isolated point only. AND IT MOST OFTEN CATCHES LOCALS! Any copper will tell you this. The maxx lads will have GPS warning devices and will slow for the camera and then go back to doing what they do.

3) Humps.

These really work. They genuinely slow traffic. Even the max lads have to slow - in fact they'll slow even more than the locals will because otherwise the front skirt of their modded car will get ripped off. Problem is they'll create noise pollution in the village, the locals will HATE THEM WITH A VENGEANCE and the cars that will suffer worn out shock absorbers will be the people living in the village who go over them daily - i.e. YOU. Huge 4x4 don't have to slow for 'em but your little sports car will get a hammering or you'll have to creep over 'em at 5mph..a rear ender waiting to happen.

4) Chicanes
These infernal things will cause the locals misery every day and inconvenience the maxx lads once a month. Does that sound fair to you?

5) Trafpol.

Best option. Have a car parked in the village on racedays. The lads will soon get the message - despite their claims that they are "being picked on" or "victimised".

In short: beware of asking for traffic calming. Who'll suffer isn't the driver occasionally passing through but the locals who will suffer it every day. If you do ask for calming you can guarantee you'll get it - and not just the little bit you ask for, no, you'll get two miles of humps and chicanes because they can.

Speak to your local Police Force and ask for their Traffic Sections tasking unit. Phone them explain what the problem is, and they should send a Traffic car down to you.
If you have no joy with that e mail me with your details and I`ll get a traffic car into your village..............if possible.

Thanks for speedy replies.
As someone who loves driving, I dont want a speed camera or humps, chicane will cause more grief than all of these put together, so I think just a car at the start/end of village at the weekends would be very effective, its not just mr maxx, both the rta's i have seen were caused by the people coming in/going out of side roads onto main village street meeting the garden centre traffic.

Is that Irchester, Wollaston or Bozeat by any chance?

Always surprised me that plod aren't out and about when there's an event on at Santa Pod. Having said that, most people seem well behaved when they come out of the track at the FIA meetings, so I'm guessing this is more down to the "lifestyle" events and RWYB days? Usual story of the few ruining things for the many. Might be worth contacting the track to suggest a "please drive carefully" note in the programme or over the PA at the end of each meeting? Santa Pod has enough battles with local authorty as it is (noise levels, planning permission and so on), so I'm sure they'd be willing to help out, if only to stay "on side" with the locals.

A village local to me complained about traffic and speeding (has a nice green and some good pubs, so is a magnet for bikes during the summer). The result was a set of chicanes that were so badly thought out and poorly lit that they directly caused at least three serious accidents. Cue repeated digging up and "reprofiling" at considerable expense. Stupid thing is that a neighbouring village has a similarly nice green and pub but no calming...guess which one is more popular. D'oh! There goes the local economy.

I'm with DON here, you don't want traffic calming it'll make you miserable(unless you already are) and it may reduce your house price too. i know i wouldn't buy a house with miles of humps n gatso round it, sod that. don't do it mate.

Part of the reason I don't speed in 30 mph zones is that I can't complain about other people speeding outside my house.

You could always try a full sized dummy with a bright dayglow jacket in the front garden for a couple of days.

It sounds naff, but get the local kids to make up signs asking people to stick to the limit and have them printed. Has slowed me down on occasion.

We have the same problem in our street a calmed 30kph road with lots of kids etc.......local plod don't wanna know, so we just park our cars 1 left and 1 right 1left and 1 right, leaving enough space for 1 car only...problem solved!!!
Perhaps you can do this in your village or have you yellow lines......?

My thoughts exactly. You can sort out to do this of a weekend only (when the major problem is) and then there's no annoying "traffic calming" stuff there during the week.

Alternatively buy a white van, get a signwriter to put "Polite Camera Partnership" on it, and park it at one end or the other of the village each weekend

£2 will get you a section of black drainpipe, cut one end at 45 degrees. glue a handle to it. Get a square mop bucket, and attach a length of old wire between the two.

buy a yellow waistcoat and stand with contraption on the pavement.
laugh hysterically as you watch all the cars slam on the brakes when they see you.

frown when you realise there all locals who already know theres no traps, compared to the outsiders that slow because they don't.

PS the accidents ; locals or outsiders?

In my opinion the best form of traffic calming is parked cars.

Chicanes sole purpose is make people investigate quite how fast they can take them at. Speed humps leads to drivers slowing for the hump, revving until they get to the next one etc.

Speed traps of any form always catch the locals. My parents live on a narrow ul-de-sac and the entrance to the local road is at 45 degrees. To make matters worse the local road is curved which all means visibility is poor, and therefore it can be difficult to pull out safely especially if traffic is speeding.

So the residents ask the Police to speed trap on the local road, my parents didn't. Guess who was done for speeding? Yes 2 of those that complained!

Poddington is my guess and at the weekend you can’t move for coffin dodgers in their Rover 400’s/Austin Maestro/ Volvo 740’s. To get there is all back roads and of course it is next to Santa Pod. Frankly I can’t blame you for wanting measures.

I've been to several RWYB days at Pod and enjoy the roads on the way there. But I dont speed through the 30 sections. The idea of Grandchild on bike going down drive too fast, cant stop, and under my car is not very appealing!...
So i'm all up for lots of trafpol in the villages. Should help to keep the locals happy, keep Pod open, and reduce the trafpol on the safe sections....eh hem
