Second Hand Car Dealers...
Discussion
....you know the ones, have a plot of land, normally a bit of tarmac and a portakabin to do the deals in. They generally have between 10-30 cars on site depending on size and are great for the <10k car
Are they in danger of going extinct?
We've had 2 in our area go in a month and they have been there for years by all accounts
I am assuming they've gone bust as the lots were suddenly empty one day and haven't seen a car since

It's not exclusive to the Portakabin brigade, lots of dealers are having a rough time of it.Two long standing TVR specialists have gone this year and plenty of franchise dealers have gone bust as well, although unless you are owed money by them you wouldn't know as they seamlessly transfer to new owners under "prepac" insolvency deals and wave their debts cheerily goodbye.
Looking for a cheap runabout, i'm seeing lots of Autotrader ads from 'Traders', where the car is pictured parked on the street, there's no website or landline, and viewing is by 'appointment only'.
Are these real traders or not? At least 50% of the cars i'm looking at seem to be these types of adverts.

There's a lot of this around at the moment, not having a forecourt lets you filter a lot of messers and saves massively on your costs. Are these real traders or not? At least 50% of the cars i'm looking at seem to be these types of adverts.
when i ring up i say
"im calling about the car"
when they say which one, hang up
although some clever dealers near me are getting wise to this and having seperate mobiles for each car, google the phone number
the other alternative is to buy some old skool cool scrub a dub dub lovin, cant go wrong there

A friend of a friend of a friends uncle is one of those dealers and last summer I was amazed when I was sittin chatting to him when I could see him eyeing up a car on a back of a lorry that was going to the scrap . He stopped the lorry , gave him 100 quid for the car and within a few hours he had it on the forecourt for£ 999, mot included . That is a lesson I will never forget
I'm not sure about the going bust aspect of your post.
These kind of traders are probabaly more in common with private sellers than car dealers.
They have huge advantages over the showroom 2nd hand car, premises rent, sales person commission, dealers.
Overheads are low, because of this you can haggle a better deal.
Downside is they could be gone the next day, if you've checked the car out what is the problem.
What it comes down to is cost, showroom dealers cannot compete with private land dealers, simple fact, end of.
