Mk 1 - How to change bulbs!
Discussion
Is it possible you still have the original sealed units?
If so you need to get a set of replacement 7inch lucas type lights. It's a standard unit for loads of old cars, Mini's, Landrovers etc. Remove the old headlights which are all one piece and replace with these units and your new bulbs.
Big plus is that they'll be much brighter than the dim yellow you get from the sealed units.

If it's still on the original headlights, you don't! They're sealed beam units which means you change the entire headlight.
In fact, what you do is replace them with units that have conventional bulbs, available from the likes of MX5 Parts (Wipac) or Cibie versions from Larkspeed. Either way they'll be much brighter than the original sealed beam units ever were.

Exactly so! Perhaps Halfords will take your bulbs back but since you bought the extra bright ones you might prefer to keep and use them anyway.Incidentally, I was amused that the Halfords guy had never come across a sealed beam unit but then, that's probably just me showing my age and a lifetime spent with older british cars!
