Does anyone have any D3 touring owner experiences...
I'm looking to change my current car as need something for an expanding family with good mpg - this seems to fit the bill perfectly?

If you have any points, tips, knowledge it would be much appreciated.

Driven one a while back.

Very nice to drive (obviously) and very fast for such a small engine. Easily faster than my E46 325i. But unless you really like Alpinas I'd go for a 330d or 335d. Fast it may be, a straight six will always be nicer to drive and probably won't use a lot more fuel either.
But if you're looking for an exclusive, fast and economical sports saloon, then go for it.

Check out thealpinaregister.com and post a topic on the forum. You will get an enthusiastic repsonse I'm sure. I own a D3 BiTurbo in saloon form and personally think it's one of the best "real world" cars you can own. Superb performance, handling and economy, exclusivity and fantsastic residuals. My only regret is that I didn't buy a touring version as I have since acquired a dog!
