I've been unfortunate enough to be in the car several times today and heard the BBC news. They've picked up on some story of a survey done by some childrens action group that claims that 10% of all children have been 'in contact' with a car.

They then found some poor woman whos mother had been killed in a road traffic accident and therefore the OBVIOUS conclusion that they've drawn is that speed limits should be reduced from 30mph to 20mph in towns and further traffic calming measures introduced.

WHY WHY WHY are the motorists being targeted here? WHY cant our children be taught the highway code like they used to be via high profile TV campaigns etc? WHY cant parents take more responsibility for their children and ensure their children are NOT playing on or near roads. WHERE is the ownership here? Are we saying that cars are driving on footpaths or that children are on roads??? I drove through a village recently where traffic calming methods had been introduced. There were STILL children playing on the roads and road sides - would it not have been cheaper to teach the children to stay away from the roads, rather than introduce traffic calming so they could still wander about like sheep??

YES, its awful to hear of an accident whereby a pedestrian is killed or injured, but surely oppressing motorists even further isnt ALWAYS the answer??

Rant over!! smile

yes

Just dust off Jimmy Saville for a few adverts and that should solve the problem.

Seriously though; there's more traffic than say 30 years ago so there is greater incidence of accidents, add to that there is no road safety awareness training in schools now and it's not difficult to conclude that there are more accidents, it's sad but inevitable. The education in schools can be addressed of course and that would go a long way to reducing the statistics.

My son is 9, even though I tell him a lot to check before stepping into the road he still does step out without looking sometimes (there is only so much you can do when you see them once a week) but he has never seen the films they used to show in schools.

Sure there was a TV ad campaign but they do kind of get lost in a sea of other mostly trivial adverts on TV these days.
