Last year i tried to save a 280 fhc from the scrap heap, i know it needed a bit of work and i thought it would make a fun porject to turn it into a track toy, so far i have replaced the suspension, brakes, repaired the out riggers, rewired it polybushed it, fitted racing seats and roll cage, its been on 1 trackday where it lasted 1/2 the day and now its leaking oil from the diff gearbox and crank case.

i'm starting to think its going to be like triggers old broom, with 3 new handles and 2 heads????

whats next?

In my experience what comes next is:

Radiator
Gearbox
Radiator (again) with cooling fan
Camshaft

Anyway, see it as an excuse to fit an LSD!

Pretend it's a racing car that needs a total re-build between every event. biggrin

What's a couple of little oil leaks, I mean you could have smacked it into the barrier and carried the bits home in bin bags. yikes

Thats crap to have a fire after all that work. If the fire was the garages fault they should coff up for the cost of repairs after all they are the professionals.

Jesus christ what sort of garage does that to a mans car..That was one of my biggest fears as ive had loads of fuel leaks..One was so bad i drove it 12 miles and used £40 worth of petrol..When i got there and they got it up on the ramp it was p!ssing out an inch away from a hot exhaust..I was furious that id paid them to sort it and could of burnt to death..needless to say they did it for free..But if they had burnt my car..well they would of come in the next morning to a shell garage and i dont mean one that sells petrol...Every garage is covered by liability insurance so i think they owe you a replacement..Sorry to hear it after all you have done though..Hope it gets resolved..Ziga

Missed this earlier but I don't think I've ever seen a wedge that DIDN'T have oil leaks from the engine, 'box and diff! Well not one that's done any sort of real miles anyway, let's leave out the garage queens wink
Mine also weeps PAS fluid just to add to the chassis-preservation-exhaust-smoking ambience biggrin

Gearboxes leak from the O-ring around the selectror shaft. They can also weep from around the output shaft seal, that can be changed in -situ.
Diffs can leak from any permutation of the three shaft seals plus, if you're unlucky and someone's been fiddling, the rear cover as well.

It's a British tradition that goes back to old motorcycles: if the engine stopped dripping you knew you'd run out of oil biggrin

Condolences

I sincerely hope it is just the car that has lost the will to livesmile

As it is a track toy, I guess you have dumped the CIS and carbed it.
If so...give some thought to making your own 1960s type basic loom.
Big piece of pegboard and pegs. Broomstick with reels of wire on it.
Pull the wires round the pegs then wrap it with tape.

I have oil on the garage floor and like wedg1e says when it stops leaking i know its empty. I bet every one's wedge on here has an oil leak from 1,2,or 3 places at least.

I look forward to the wiff of smoke that comes out the gearstick gator, after its been stood overnight, at least i know that my gearbox still has oil in it.
the other thing is you dont need to go out and buy magic tree's cos it gives you that nice oily smell mmmmmhhhhhh? shame you cant put Castrol R in your gearbox cos that smells even better xxx

Hi mate..You said it had a fuel leak..Its not the hardest thing to miss..1.It stinks no matter where its coming from you will find it via your nose..2.If they put the engine in then surely they should of checked all that..Sounds like a cop out..Have a chat with your insurance company..

If the car was on their premises and entrusted to their care, it doesn't matter what they were doing to it.

By law all such businesses have to have to have public liability insurance.

I would be getting quotes for the repairs (elsewhere) and then presenting them with a bill.

If they won't play ball then take them to the small claims court, where there is a low set fee.

Why not put up a question about this on the General Gassing Forum where there are lawyers who can advise ? smile
