Saying that, the result would have been the same.

Nice car the 964, good reputation, would be proud to own one!

However it was up against a better looking, faster , cheaper to own (and purchase)car. Not to mention the sound and volume of the exhaust note!

Yet still the V8S wasn't chosen - takes all sorts I suppose!

(IMHO of course)

964's are one of the prettiest cars ever made. The TVR S is a nice looking car alright but not even in the same league.

All in my humble opinion of course.

Now if you want a fantatic looking TVR the 350c and cerbera are right up there with the best.

Id still have a Porsche though.

Sorry chaps
The TV people dithered around and by then the 944 Turbo and the 944S2 had both been sold so all I had that was "comparable" was a 964.

It was an unfair comparison but thats TV for you.
BTW Penny Mallory wanted to buy it if that's any recommendation.

The car is for sale in PH Classifieds if you want a "Famous" 964 nows your chance...LOL

Doubt it's faster than a 964, very much doubt it's cheaper to own and the looks aren't as nice as a Griff IMO. That V8 exhaust note is fantastic though. But quality wise there is no comparison.

I think you will find if anything it should be 1-1 as the only ever time a V8S and a 964 have been compared before was in 1991 by Performance Car Magazine!! That time 10 sports car journalists DROVE all cars and decided which was the 'Performance car of the Year 1991' so they had some basis to their argument other than my legs are too long or my wife likes the 911!

The V8S came 3rd and the 964 RS came in a joint 4th, so like I said if anything its 1-1!!

Only one real way to sort this out...on the track..

Individually timed laps of a circuit and get Melv to bring along his 964 C2...

The V8S is faster than the 964, 0-60 in under 5 secs, in 1991 the 964 Turbo was only marginally faster!
Insurance for a V8S is around £250 and as it has a Rover V8 parts are cheap and easy to find, you will find its much cheaper to run that a 964! Correct it doesnt look as nice as the Griff, IMHO, but whats your point we are comparing the V8S and 964 looks????

Quality wise.... .......mmmm well the one thing the judges did agree on was the 964 interior was horrible and the V8S's was better! and should we just say the TV show didnt mention and cut out bits to save Alan a little embarrassment!! As he claimed in his plea that the 964 was very reliable, when only the day before the 964 blew up on the way to the track and didnt make it, and had to film later the next week!!! My V8S has never broke down..............?

It was a good show with two good cars, had it been either 944 the outcome would have been definitely different, as Penny doesnt like them!

Steady on chaps someone might think you are taking this seriously....!

Any standard 964 Convertible is going to be blown away by the V8S the 964 is much slower!

I'd wouldn't associate the word DOG with either car.

How about "Fastest greased weasel shit off the silver plated shovel!".

Bit of a tasteless mouthful I suppose.

Well mate, please pardon me for thinking the 964 is positively the ugliest '911 derivative' that has ever been drawn - if not one of the ugliest cars still going around those days.
I can understand the attraction for the older 3.0 SCs or 3.2s, they have now nearly become some sort of classics with typical out of date design features such as the ghastly bumpers and unpainted plastic body parts here and there (not to mention that beefed up dreadful VW beetle engine note). But 964s ?
By the way, back in 1991 they looked so dated already that Porsche dealers used to park them away from 968s in the showrooms.

Would love to see this comparison, could we make it at Oulton, so I don't have to travel too far :-)

ive owned several examples of both........a well driven 964 will wipe the floor with the TVR........nothing wrong with the TVR, but not in the same league. The 964 is a very pretty car.

You are entitled to your opinion, but many motoring journalists disagree with you, as do I? I thought you were serious until you said the 964 is a pretty car, so this was a tongue firmly in cheek post....! Either that or "you should have gone to SpecSavers.....!"

Guys why don't we all go over to the TVR forums and make nuisances of ourselves about how pretty some cars are

My guess is the V8S and 964 C2 (not cab) are very evenly matched performance wise. The 964 will do 4.9 secs 0-60 and 161mph according to some reports. Don't tell me the V8S wipes the floor with it, especially as the 964 has better traction off the line.

I doubt you will find a V8S 'much cheaper' to run that a 964, even if insurance is cheaper (it won't be much cheaper as you can get classic insurance on a 964 as it is over 10 years old). My guess is that the cost of parts is similar and the 964 less likely to break down, even if yours has proved reliable. Once you start looking beneath the GRP at the engineering practices you'll see that Stuttgart was a little bit more thorough.

I mentioned the Griff looks nicer as the S cars had very fussy styling. IMO, the 964s wipe the floor with them looks wise but I am biased (which gets us nowhere). I mentioned the Griff to show that TVR have got styling very 'right' in the past.

As for the interior, the 964 interior is an anachronism, but a charming/classic one at that (half the appeal) - and screwed together bl**dy well. You will find a V8S interior an 80's anachronism, but arguably not as 'classic'. Horses for courses, but I am talking overall quality, from dash to dampers. Ask an independent engineer to take apart a V8S and a 964 and give you his unbiased findings. Even taking into account isolated 'engine failures' (they still use the 964 bottom end in the new 996GT2s, which shows its integrity), you will probably buy a Porsche next if you can get over your 'anti-Fritz' prejudices

I do not intend to turn this into a TVR vs Porsche thread of which there have been many. I am merely adding a counterpoint to some anti-964 comments which I feel are unjust. At the end of the day, the V8S guys have their forum and we have ours, and views differ. Please respect them.

Cheers
Domster

Who are these journalists ?????????

I think the only way to prove this is a HEAD 2 HEAD test.

P.S. can i bring along my Westfield as well just to show you what a REAL car will do with ANY TVR/road going PORKA.
& It's only got 4 cylinders..........
