X3 2.0d loss of power

Evening all,
Hopefully someone can help me before I toddle off to the dealer!!
2006 (150bhp) 2.0d with 61k miles.
On a regular basis I seem to loose power.... At first I thought it was the clutch slipping but now I'm not sure. For example, tonight, in 2nd gear around 20 mph, put my foot to the floor and nothing...... slowly the rev's built up and my speed slowly increased.... Try again and then its the opposite, revs go up with the speed... Although I have noticed that its not as quick at accelerating at the moment. The same goes for the rest of the gears.
To add to the puzzle, i rest the trip computer and where i used to get 34mpg, now it is saying 55 mpg????
Anyone have any idea what might be causing this, swirl flaps, dead turbo???
Oh, one other thing, in the fuel filler pipe, i'm sure there was a metal cover so you couldn't see into the tank, this seems to have disappeared. Can someone confirm if i'm going mad!!
