After some slight blagging i've managed to get someone to agree to buying me a rally experience day for Christmas. I've read up and it appears that quite a few sound the biz but you only get about half an hour in the car and most of it consists of sitting in a classroom.

Anyone got any recommendations or adrenalin filled alternatives I enjoy scaring the s*** out of myself so the crazier the better!

Can recommend the London Rally School, which is based somewhere just north of Oxford. I did the Acropolis Day, there were about 6 of us on the course, pretty much all the instruction was carried out in the cars, not in the classroom so we had loads of time in the cars, the instructor was brilliant and it was all round a memorable day out.

Long ago I did a day at the Silverstone Rally School (not related to the circuit other than that it is near). I cannot remember the number of students to a car, but it was fantastic fun.

Quite like the sound of it being timed.

Another vote for Silverstone Rally School. Mk2 RS2000 Escorts, loose gravel. Individual exercises in power oversteer, handbrake turns, Scandinavian flicks etc, then a few hoons around the full gravel stage. A very sideways day! Instructors quite happy for you to push; I accidentally thumped the tail of the car against a tyre wall when getting rather too sideways. Instructor wasn't too fussed, as the cars are pretty battered anyway...

Some rally schools use FWD cars; can't imagine it'd be as much fun.

I have been looking at these for Christmas, found one in the North East which sounded good - £200 for a full day. However I then found an Evo article about it which said you only get 49 minutes driving in an entire day - seems a bit crap to me!

Done a few of these now, one with work, that was up north on an airfield, was good fun but the cars were basically road cars with roll cages and the course was basic. Recently attended the london rally school, got the day as a gift from the wife and it was excellent. Great instructors and propper cars, got to drive a full spec mk2 escort through a forest, then went against the clock and came 2nd!!. Would reccomed this place for a true rally type experince www.rally-school.com.
Its always best to shop around with these type places as many websites are third party agencies who inflate prices. Good luck its a great gift

I'd highly recommend the Phil Price rally day in Wales. Unlike alot of Ferarri experiences and the like where you get 3 or 4 laps, I was driving for a large proportion of the day. You learn to control a slide in a old Escort RS2000 on a figure of eight course (choosing whether you want an instructor with you or not), before driving an Impreza around their special rally stage (to give you an idea of how good the stage is, we were sharing the course with Alistair McCrae on the day who was carrying out pre season testing on his new car)

To end the day, Phil takes you round the stage at competition pace in his Escort Cosworth rally car, which is an experience I won't forget.

IMO a bargain for less than £300.
