Help with new XBOX 360

So i bought an XBOX today and when seting it up noticed that i can't have the AV and HDMI leads in at the same time.

This poses a problem for my surround sound as i use the red and white plugs to plug into a switch, which goes to my DVD and out through the speakers.

I want to use HDMI, and i want surround sound. Do i need to go optical?

It is certainly possible on teh older (ie non slim) Xbox.

I used this on mine, now I can use my surround sound and HDMI at the same time, I'm just not sure it works with Slims.

Hmm, the slim one doesn't have the optical on the AV, it's a seperate jack.

I think i'll just run with the HDMI and buy an optical cable. Need to double check that my DVD is optical in.

Is no one using surround sound on the new xbox's?

I'm not sure what the new ones are like but on the old ones, you couldn't fit AV plug in at the same time as the HDMI lead as the two clashed.

I too run HDMI to a ONkyo AV reciever, but this doesn't carry the digital audio so I had to get a special connecter that plugs in the xbox AV plug that just has audio connections on it. This plug allows you to plug in a HDMI lead at the same time as the AV plug.

Is that any help?

Yes, a little - I had an older xbox a while ago, pre HDMI and it had component HD cables. With that came the ability to run the red and white cables into my DVD and use it for surround sound. I believe the new ones no longer do that.

So to be clear, to achieve HD picture and decent sound through my DVD i'll need and optical cable, and this is marked by the term SP-IF or something on the back. I'll also need to make sure my DVD supports optical in?

Thats odd. A mate of mine bought the new slim xbox the other week too but his has the AV plug with red and white connectors on so you can have HDMI in at the same time.

Davie, it looks like they've done it deliberately for some reason.

My old Xbox lead fits fine with the HDMI plugged in but the lead that came with the slim has a bit sticking out to stop you fitting the HDMI at the same time.

OP where did you buy your slim from? Sounds like they have left the adaptor out of the box.

I bought it from HMV, there are no more plugs in the box. And Bugeye, you're right the current one stops you putting both in at the same time.

Why do they do this, do force you into buying MS approved stuff?

Not sure mate, I only found out when I read your post this morning!
Got a new Xbox slim yesterday after my old 360 died for the second time and the lead in the box definitely has the lead Dave describes that blocks HDMI and AV at the same time.

My guess is they don't want you feeding two monitors from the same Xbox for some reason (possible HDMI content protection?).
